When I got out of the music business (full time) I had a plethora of equipment that was really in the way. I went on a selling spree, getting rid of a lot of vintage pieces along with some newer pieces.

SOLD

1969 Marshall 50 Watt Plexi JMP-50 w/Matching 1969 Marshall Cane Face 4x12 Cabinet
1982 Marshall 2203 100 Watt JCM-800 w/Matching 1982 Marshall 1960A Cabinet
1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom
1981 Gibson Les Paul Standard
1987 Gibson Les Paul Standard
1971 Fender Telecaster Blonde
2011 Martin OOO-18

The selling of all of the above has financed the knife buying rut I’m currently in. I’m still way, way, way ahead monetarily so I’m sure they’ll be more knives.

I can almost bet with 100% certainty that those knives will be Shirogorovs & Medfords. I’m hooked on those two makers although I have a bunch of the other great makers as well, but they just don’t do it for me (looking at you CRK & Hinderer) I’ll never part with them….and I’ll carry them…..but I won’t be buying any more of them.

I know Greg catches a lot of flack, and Shiro’s get slagged for being way overpriced. I love the workmanship of both brands, Medford being more industrial and requiring some break in time….which I don’t have a problem with.

Medford Der Hund I’m coming for you.

The heart wants what the heart wants.

The Aflac Duck The Aflac Duck

I was visiting with Tony Marfione at his place in FL years ago when he showed me the original prototype for the "Kestrel" which I gave him the name for.
He sent me a prototype, (manual version, and not for free, but at a nice price), and a nice letter indicating that I was the one who named the model. (The letter is somewhere in a box in a closet.)

He didn't know what a kestrel was until I told him. He liked the idea and name right away.

Just a small piece of Microtech history.

Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing that, I love the Kestrel model. Definitely one of my favorites.

I actually visited the factory yesterday and met Tony. Nice guy.

Kinda the same for me. Yesterday I went into the LKS shop with $300 burning a hole in my pocket. Looked and handled some Medfords as I have never seen any in the wild. Really well made and certainly on my radar when I decide to break the $600 mark for a pocket knife.

...but I walked out $525 poorer with another Combat Troodon.

I mean com'on. It's an impractical yet wicked looking knife. I had to have it. I'm 40 years old and regressing back to being a 12 year old again, I guess. Tanto, full serrations, actively seeking out a knife with a Thwack/Thwack action and a wiggly blade over obsessing with lateral play or lock rock, etc.

However, the Medford Preatorian they had under the glass was super nice. It sucks getting stuck in the higher end production/midtech bracket. I can't impulse buy like I once did, but I do appreciate the quality and feel more fulfilled with my purchases in a pocket knife. It's funny. I can be totally happy with a $200 giant fixed blade pry bar or a $300 sword, but I'm getting straight up prissy about my pocket edcs :p

Oklahoma Outlaw Oklahoma Outlaw : That moan you just heard that sounded like a large animal somewhere off in the middle distance suffering a slow death was me reading the list of seven things that you sold. I guess you really like Shirogorovs and Medfords. :D

There were some prime pieces I let go, but I was done and I knew it. The knife journey started off small (Benchmade Mini Griptilian) and just blossomed from there. Blues Blues gave me some sage advice early on. I guess it stuck.

I admit I was a music gear whore but it’s how I made my living. I have no regrets…..because I made a boatload of cash on some of the pieces I sold.

The ‘69 50 Watt Plexi would eat the 100 Watt 2203 for lunch. I slaved them too. Lol

One thing I've learned, rated wattage != how many decibels an amp can push out. my 50 watt Single Rectifier is stupid loud. The difference is in how much compression happens at high volumes...which is actually kind of nice. Of course, a Plexi, or 800, is a completely different beast than a Rectifier. Plexis are known to be insanely loud, but a good one is pretty much heaven. I do love a good 800 though. Classic, especially hit in the front with a boost. Old School Metal tone! LOL

Oklahoma Outlaw Oklahoma Outlaw : I was just razzin' ya. I'm sure you made the right choice, and it's great that your life took you from one huge enthusiasm to another.

By the way, I've never been to heaven, but I've been to Oklahoma. ;)

Your last line hits home. Hoyt Axton was from Broken Bow, OK and I knew him quite well. His dad was the Athletic Director and football coach at Broken Bow High School. Small world we live in.

It’s hell when you’re playing in a country band….during the 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s. Sometimes I’d full stack it with the JMP-50 on top. Good sound men are invaluable.

I can't believe this. I love Hoyt Axton, and I've admired ("worshipped" is not too strong a word) his songs for all my life. Mr. Outlaw, sir, there's a beer in your future in exchange for some Hoyt Axton stories. Let's make a plan. And I don't give a damn about a greenback dollar, either.

I don’t share the MT love you fellas have but I do own one - an auto Kestrel with high polished Brend blade. Sweetness

I don't have any particular affiliation or affection, I've owned what you see above and a couple others which are long gone...but it was fun to have the opportunity to visit with Tony on an invite back when. Pretty vanilla stuff from the MT lineup is all I've ever owned.
