Shirogorov & Medford Have Ruined Me

It’s hell when you’re playing in a country band….during the 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s. Sometimes I’d full stack it with the JMP-50 on top. Good sound men are invaluable.

Marshalls instead of a good old Twin Reverb for country? or a Tweed Bassman? Blasphemy! Of course, I would have done the same thing...but I do love me some Bassman.

I had a 1974 50 watt Fender Bassman head and the 2x18 cabinet. Sounded glorious. I was able to get a great tone out of the Marshalls….and just use my volume pot on the guitar when it was go time.

Ever use a Variac on the Plexi? Get the EVH tone going on! haha

Lol. Never did. Back in those days a lot of that type of information wasn’t available…sadly. The opening to “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” still sends shivers up my spine every time I hear it.

That tone... I was never the biggest van Halen fan, but Ed had the tone on lock down the first couple albums. Hot for Teacher still gets my blood pumping.

I believe those are all that remain in my possession. I used to have SOCOM and the mini version...but those were years ago and long gone now.
Yeah. I wish I still had a few back that I sold off over the years. That Vero Beach is awesome! It’s rare to see these. If you ever decide to part with it please let me know.

I can't believe this. I love Hoyt Axton, and I've admired ("worshipped" is not too strong a word) his songs for all my life. Mr. Outlaw, sir, there's a beer in your future in exchange for some Hoyt Axton stories. Let's make a plan. And I don't give a damn about a greenback dollar, either.

You can learn more about my bat$hit crazy venture into music in Gary’s thread…beginning on page 2….

One thing I've learned, rated wattage != how many decibels an amp can push out. my 50 watt Single Rectifier is stupid loud. The difference is in how much compression happens at high volumes...which is actually kind of nice. Of course, a Plexi, or 800, is a completely different beast than a Rectifier. Plexis are known to be insanely loud, but a good one is pretty much heaven. I do love a good 800 though. Classic, especially hit in the front with a boost. Old School Metal tone! LOL

My amp tech was Dario Gomez…extremely inconvenient since he was in California and I was basically everywhere. He kept my heads in tip-top shape. He also built me a reverb head which I used a lot.

He was referred to me by Jimmy Wilsey (RIP) who was Chris Isaak’s guitarist. He had rebuilt both of Jimmy’s Twin Reverbs. His tone speaks for itself. It’s a shame that Dario and Jimmy had a falling out before Jimmy passed.

I've never had a tech... As long as my heads fired up I was happy! Haha! I should get my Mesa looked at though, since it's near 20 years old. I don't trust myself with not destroying the boards with my terrible soldering skills!

Jimmy had some amazing tone!

Both of my heads were so old, and although they were in road cases, suffered from wear & tear of almost nightly use. Mainly filter caps, new tubes and biasing, and resistors. Being PTP wired made things easier for him. Dario is a great amp tech and worked on many well known (not me) players amps.

Jimmy was a hell of a dude and a good friend.
