Shirogorov sucks right?

Seriously? Someone please tell me that they're not any better than a Schrade.

Had the pleasure recently of handling a 111. It's bigger than I like, but man was it nice to handle. I've been browsing and have sort of fallen in love with the F3.

I'm getting married in October and we were talking about buying ourselves wedding presents. She wants a handbag and balisong(gotta love it!) This could very well be mine, unless of course you all can talk me out of buying a $1000 flipper... So they do suck, right?

Can't figure out the tone of your post, really can't...

I've never heard of any major quality or performance problems with Shirogorovs, but I think the regular production pieces are priced about $400-500 too high for what they are, and the "custom division" pieces $1000-1200 too high for what they are.

Yes they suck, and are over priced. Don't get one.

So let us know how you like yours when you get it. ;)

That's my problem. I love the knife and near as I can tell they have no real competition, but they're way overpriced.

I don't like frame locks or bulky, overbuilt knives which basically rules out 95% of the midtech world. I haven't seen anything I like as much as the Shiro, but 1k just seems silly when you figure it against something like a Sebenza.

LOL. Yeah, what he said...

I used to think Shirogorovs were overpriced junk. And then I handled a few. Now I can tell you, they're just terrible....

Terrible because they're so freakin sweet, I can't stop thinking about scoring one!

;)

Looking forward to your pics. And congrats, BTW!

Do they suck? No. Are they worth a g-note? I dont think so. At least not for the $400 production versions that double to triple their msrp after crossing the pond. You will find only one authorized retailer for north america sorta sealed their fate. Im waiting for the hype to calm down before i even attempt to buy one. Its gonna be awhile but i simply cant pay double or triple what they should go for. Way too many nice knives to be had in their price bracket. But at least they arent asking that price for 90% g10 like some makers. Really you have to ask yourself how bad do you want one and what are you willing to pay for that want. If you want a similar but much more affordable but every bit as good id look at a carson lab boiling flipper. They have similar styling cues but are a little more simple like a sebbie. But you can get them under two bills and they are some of the smoothest solid flippers i have had.

Nailed it!

I have never seen one in person, but I do like their designs a lot. I have never read/heard anything bad about them other than price, and I don't believe this is the fault of the maker.

That said, I think I would love to own one, if the price comes down to a reasonable level at some point.

Shirogorovs are cool now as the XM-18 was years ago. Both are production knives that are hard to get directly from the maker so you're paying for 2nd market pricing. If you wanna be one of the cool kids, then get one, but know that you are definitely over paying.

They do make one of the best production flippers IMHO.

I like the shape and style of that knife, but as mentioned above, I don't like frame locks. The whole damn world of midtechs is using them unfortunately.

I don't get the point of this thread. You answered your own question, if it's "way overpriced" in your opinion, then don't buy it. Overpriced as in cost of materials, well yeah, that's a given... Knives like that aren't meant to be the best bang for your buck. It's for people who appreciate the finer things, it's worth whatever it's worth to you.

I also can't figure out your tone as well... you're joking when you're asking if they suck, right? And the way you phrase it, "shirogorov sucks right?" Makes it sound like you already think shirogorov sucks, you just want to make sure... Then you go on to say how you handled one and really liked it. Your friend tells you something so you assume it must be right, even though you could do 1 minute of research and find he's incorrect. Sounds like a troll thread.

Overpriced? That's subjective. Quality of build? Superb, that's a fact. Never talked to a dissatisfied shirogorov owner.

Never talked to a dissatisfied shirogorov owner.

Keep in mind that it may have to do with the fact that these knives are probably not used or carried as extensively as less expensive knives / knives whose prices are less inflated.

And remember, if you speak about your dissatisfaction with a knife you paid a 200%+ markup on the secondary market for, you're unlikely to get your investment back.

What friend told me something and what did they tell me? I'm confused.

All knives are overpriced with consideration to material cost. These unfortunately are overpriced when compared to their competition... But there in lies my problem. There's no alternative at the moment that I know of. Simple design, beautiful execution and no frame lock.

Ah that's all my mistake, man. Skimmed your post and read "someone please tell me that they're not any better than a schrade" as "someone told me they're not any better than a schrade". Makes your post even more nonsensical, why do you jump to the conclusion shirogorov sucks? "So they do suck, right?" Who said they sucked...? Your opinion?

And why use schrade as a comparison, if you're talking in terms of utility value then why are you even looking at shirogorovs... If you're expecting it to perform ten times better then you're in for a surprise.

As far as the "tone" of the thread that folks seem so concerned with, there's no direct question in the OP. I have a definite style when it comes to writing and it's not for everyone. What I wanted was a discussion about the awesomeness that is a Shiro knife and hopefully some worthy alternatives.

The Shiro is a strange thing. As a knife and just a knife it is a magnificent lust-worthy thing to be sought and coveted. As a consumer product though it's ridiculous. Like an iPhone alternative that costs $2500. It shouldn't be successful. My OP, with some artistic license, is about the way the two sides of that scale play against each other. Unique in Shiro's case.

Yes, that too. Welcome. For your own sake, leave and don't come back. But welcome.

Paka did throw up an interesting product though. The Carson Tech Lab Boiling Flipper is pretty sick and I'd never seen one. Anyone know of any others in the same style?
