hey everybody. thanks for the help with the sword...it is the one that i couldnt see the hamon, and hte sucessor to the W2 version that broke
it has been.. er.. trying.
forged out of W1 stock, it didnt harden up the first time.. but it was already sharp, so i dulled it up a bit and normailzed and heat treated it. here is how it turned out. Used Rutland black furnace cement, and quenched in Parks 50.

these pictured were taken with the blade at about 220 grit.. and i double etteched it to see what the hamon looked like.. will take it to higher grit.. but not before i make the handle.

what would this hamon pattern be called? also, there is a "shadow" of the hamon about 1/4" above the visible hamon (from the interupted quench) but it didnt show up after i polished it. will it show up better in the higher grits?

Man your stepping up to the plate taking all kinds of challenges, all as I can say is well done and keep going

Chris, that is flippin awesome! Great hamon (as usual lol ) and the sori you forged in is nice and gentle, I cant wait to see the finished product!

Those fittings look great, Are they lacquer, horn, other? I assume you are going for a full size grip and a different colour, Did you wrap that one^?

the fittings in the pic are horn... and i was planning on doing a handle that fits... i dont know how big that will be yet.. working on that. and no.. it was a picture that i found and liked. i didnt wrap it
thanks guy for hte encouragment!
~Chris

hey..
thought here...
what if i were to make the fittings out of somethng more resliliant than horn?
would it ruin the look? perhaps Micarta or G10 (i have some whitish-green G10 i found in a dumpster... and i have some natural canvas micarta too)

what do you think? i have the horn too.. think i should go the "traditional"? thanks!
~Chris

Hey,Chris-first off outstanding work.I really love the hamon with the "shadow"-beautiful!In my opinion that blade deserves a traditional finish.Shawn

Hey Chris, nice work! Your skills are definitely growing, and quickly.

Micarta would be pretty cool, durable and tough. But horn has that traditional feel to it if that's what you want.

Could you go with micarta and then a very small tsuba out of blackened steel?

That looks great! I'll be looking forward to seeing more pics as it progresses!

Well first off, you have to tell me where the G10 dumpster is!

Corian would work too, Horn would be nice.

Hey Chris, the micara tsuba that you did on my knife looks good. I think that the micarta or G-10 that you found would look great as a larger tsuba and fittings. There is a reason that you found that stuff.

I forgot to add my oohs and ahhs to the other guys. How long and wide and thick is the blade? I could go for a piece like that!
