Shock steels S5,A8,Calidie,Unimax are not available in flat stock. I've called and emailed everywhere......idk.....whats the good of all these cool steel alloys if you can't get them in stock and small quantities ?
Might have to buy a minimum quantity, pay extra to have it rolled to a certain thickness, and sell the excess to other makers.
Probably not going to be cheap though.
Alternatively, you might contact a private facility that uses a particular steel, and see if you can snag a piece or two from them at cost.
If it's made for production shears, dies, etc... you might talk somebody into giving you a piece after the shear blades or dies break/wear out. Otherwise, it just ends up in the scrap pile. That or call some blade/die making facilities and see what you can get.
You'll still have to get it surface ground or rolled to thickness, but at least you won't have to by 30 tons of round to make a couple of knives.
A-8 modified comes in flat stock. I did some work for International Tool Steel in Fountain Inn, SC. They had a warehouse full of it. The trick is finding knife appropriate sizes. The thinnest I saw was 3/8" thick.
