AP - Seattle, WA. Researchers at the University of Washington today announced they had successfully crossbred a Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) with a Wolf (canis lupus) using undisclosed genetic manipulation techniques. Spokesmen for the university declined to comment on whether cloning was involved.

Made Ya look!

Actually, this is Hero, one of my two new woods buddies. He and his sister, Gracie are getting used to casa de Pritch and winning hearts wherever they go. (Why, oh WHY didn't I know the "power of puppy" when I was single?!?) They are four months old and are just starting formal training. They should be well suited to backpacking but I may want to put Hunter Orange vests on them to keep them from getting shot!

Gracie

My wife has expressed interest in training Gracie to be a Therapy Dog but I'm hoping Hero will work out as a SAR Tracking dog. Gracie looks a lot like Tasha, who we lost last January. For the weird files: These new pups were born EXACTLY one year to the day from when Tasha died!

Tasha

Trust me on this - Two puppies at one time is not for the faint at heart!

Beautiful pups ... they kind of look like Akitas to me but I could be wrong.

Thanks, guys. Yes, they are Akitas. They are long coats, which isn't a sub-breed but a genetic anomoly that shows up from time to time.

Cute little guy, pittsteele! We missed the 'little' puppy stage with this pair. Here is Tasha when she was 10 weeks old, back in 1995.

akitas are great.

i don't think i am brave enough to have a long-haired one though.

Chez Vec is already a big hairball tumbleweed inside as it is....

Tasha looks like she was a beauty:thumbup:
...and those little furballs look full of mischief:D

That was naughty! :grumpy: And the movie "Splice" just happened to come out, geez!

Having learned about the great story of "Hachiko" I read up on Akita's. Fascinating breed -

Akita Inu

LOL! I'm sure "Splice" was floating around in the back of my brain somewhere when I wrote my intro.

I have never been close with Akitas. They seem to really bond to their owners, and not too much fond of anyone else when they mature. I bet they make great companions. My lab's name is Gracie, and she would attack lick any intruder and force them to play fetch with her. At least we could track the slobber trail of any perpetrator to have them apprehended after the fact. Beautiful dogs! Enjoy and value their undaunting love.

you'll have to update this thread as they grow...can't wait to see how hero turns out!

cj65, that's a fair comment. i've noticed my pup (8 months now) always has to know where i am & he protects the kids from snakes and chipmunks lol, but he does not like strangers/visitors/etc. until i let him know (usually takes a couple of minutes upon first meeting someone) that it's ok...but then he'll still keep one eye on 'em.
