Shocking question

Can anyone tell me what the common metal used in Car, truck shock struts is? Seems that this would be the kind of material that would be nice to work into some very nice hand tools including maybe a knife or two.

Leaf springs are usually 5160 or 1095, as far as I have heard. Does this help?
