Shoes

I currently have a pair of medium weight backpacking boots from Zamberlan. Goretex lined, rugged, comfortable, and the Vibram soles can't be beat. Best boots I've ever had.

If I had to choose a replacement I'd probably go for something like this:

FWIW, I find traditional style combat boots or anything else with a prominent heel to be a trip hazard in rough terrain. I can't stand them.

I have enjoyed reading everyone’s idea of what the best boots or shoes are to wear. The thing I think that is being missed is that you have to wear the ones that fit you period. The ones that your buddy raves about will not necessarily be very comfortable for you at all.
The comments on the advantages and disadvantages of steel toes are an interesting sideline. I have worked in environments that not only mandated them but that they were an advantage but for my personal wear they would be a disadvantage for the environment I am in on a daily basis.
What ever you choose should be a fairly sturdy boot that can offer you some good support, traction and protection. If you choose one that covers the ankle you will get better protection and be less likely to lose it during an accident or hard scramble. Choosing a well established company that offers a wide range of styles, sizes and widths will allow you to duplicate the same fit with your next boot purchase. Many of my coworkers would buy cheep boots and then complain about how their feet and legs hurt them every day. You buy a $2 pair of boots you get a $2 fit. Keeping your feet in good condition is a work of a life time not something to consider only after things get bad.
