This is a direct cut for cut shootout between CPM-S90V and the new Carpenter CTS-20CP using the same model knives.

What I did 1st was used each knife and made 130 slicing cuts through 5/8" Manila rope then without touching the edges when straight to cardboard and it was a lot of cardboard.

The contenders, Sprint run Spyderco Para 2's in CPM-S90V and CTS 20CP

First up on rope was S90V:

Here is a shot of both piles, that's a lot of cardboard.

Conclusion:

Both steels are excellent and from all the testing I can't tell the different between them in performance either here or in my rankings.

A tie ,a friggin tie . Oh well . Thanks for taking the time to test and post. I'm one big pile of envy and still no word from kc on when my cts para will be shipping.aaahhhhhhhhh. I wonder if you keep going untill your arm falls off if one would outlast the other.

They are both that good and at the top of the pile in production knives.

I cut the same boxes with both knives, cut them in half and used equal amounts of cardboard for both knives.

Wow! Impressive and as always, good work! Was wondering how Elmax and M390 compares. Any insight?

Excellent J! This is an interesting development. Surely you can devise a definitive tie breaker right?

Yeah tell Sal to let me borrow his CARTA machine because they are too close in performance for me to tell the difference.

In production blades, well either S90V or 20CP will do better than either M390 or ELMAX.

Customs I would believe that might be a different story.

Looks like the carpenter steel had a little less chipping ( from what I can tell in the pics) !! These are 2 steels I need to try!!

Equaling S90V performance is a huge achievement. Doing it well below the cost of S90V is even better. This is a breakthrough.

Wow Jim, that is pretty amazing. Bet your forearms are burning! I can't wait to get a hold of this one. How did it sharpen up on the edge pro? Did you use the same 30 inclusive? I was really surprised at how close they are. I have been amazed at how bright and fine the edge of my CTS-XHP manic polished up, it has really gotten me excited to try this one. Thanks for taking the time to test and compare.

Yes, they were 30 inclusive. :)

Awesome, Jim! Thanks.

Thanks. :)

This is a break-through development. S90V performance at a much lower price (even after taking the CF/G10 difference out of the equation), and no longer hostage to a sole-source provider.

Now if they can mass produce it. :)

WOW! I had no idea S90V would have a real competitor - well done, Jim! :D

I have to hand it to Carpenter for developing the steel, it's a real winner. :D

I'd love to see the same test done on Spyderco's HT on M4 with the pictures

Anyhow, this test is very nicely done. I thank you for your effort!

Excellent! Now put some drops of sweat on the blade and see which one resists rust better:thumbup:!
