Shootout: CPM-S90V vs CTS-20CP

Uhhhmmm, yeah, there is that XHP thing... :( You can make something good...can you make it twice, and make it good...?

Well I think they can produce it, and that's a good thing because it's their best steel sofar IMO.

Matching S90V performance is no small feat and they developed this steel for use in knives.

I will be waiting. :D
Not too long hopefully, I just got a shipment notice from KnifeCenter:thumbup:. And since the Carpenter version isn't quite as expensive as the S90V, I'll be more eager to use it harder. Though hopefully I won't scrape another knife against the concrete this time around:eek:.

Cool. :D

I will let you do the rust testing. :D

S90V and 20CP should be very rust resistant though.

You will love it, it's been a fun steel sofar, still need to do my EDC testing with coarse edges though, that will be on video like the rest.

Will be doing coarse edges to show how agressive these steels really are.

Great test!
Thank you!

"Doing it well below the cost of S90V is even better. This is a breakthrough"

The price was really close? It matched S90v in this test. Do we know for sure it will be cheaper to produce?
S90v is hard on tools (Its hard) is this some how easier on tools but holds the same edge?
I have to think some of the xtra $$$ for the S90v model was the CF over the gray G-10.
Or am I the only one?
Mine should be here Wed/Thurs.... Yea.........Light Gray............

Off the top of my head, I think I paid $140 for these and $190 for the S90V ones. Some of that is the CF for sure, but not all of it. It's cheaper because Carpenter is charging less for it than Crucible is charging for S90V, but S90V has a well-established track record and brand recognition. 20CP does not...yet... ;)

I'm more curious about how easy it was to sharpen. One thing I'm not sure if is how the different elemental makeup affects the steel's properties. 20CP has slightly less carbon, 1% less Chromium, 0.3% more vanadium, 0.3% more molybdenum, 0.9% silicon, and 0.5% Magnesium.

At first blush I would have assumed that 20CP has less corrosion resistance, but now I'm not as sure. More vanadium means less chromium tied up in carbides, and I believe the molybdenum is also a stronger carbide former than chromium. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for better toughness. And I believe added silicon and magnesium makes the steel more "pure". Now the big question is which one is easier to heat treat.

Hmmm..... I was thinking around $135-$140 for this one & $165-$170 for the S90v Para2.
Its been a while........
