Could someone please explain Shop 1 and Shop 2? I guess they are two different shops but what's the difference?

Thanks,

Bill

Shop 1 is from the old days and is gone. Shop 2 is today and that is where all present HI's are made.

how can you tell the dif between a shop 1 and shop 2 khuk?
i have heard of the term "shop 1" before but have never fully understood it.

Shop 1: scrolled buttcap, plain bolster, no kami mark.
"Shop 2": Plain buttcap of heavier metal, (often) habaki bolster, kami mark. IIRC, "Shop 2" referred to a specific building in a relatively urban location which was used for a short period of time. BirGorkha is the name of the present shop.

Here is another shot of some Shop 1s. You can see the differences from today's offerings. The butt caps, bolsters, scabbards are different from current offerings (Sgt. Khadka offers similar scabbards though). There where also a whole lot fewer offerings back then, limited to only a few models (not sure how many though). I believe that the Shop 1s also had more weighted blades then current.

I thought I read it somewhere in the forum, Mr Lalit Lama (owner of Khukuri House in Nepal) used to be the main supplier to HI?

Uncle Bill described the relationship as follows:
kami Til Bahadur (T.B) (Bai) Bishwkarma, a kami with 400 years of family knifemaking history behind him and a 32 year veteran of Gurkha service makes the HI khukuris and a lot of "other" khukuris for sale to dealers in Kathmandu…. Major distributor is the Khukuri House, located in Thamel, (tourist capital of Nepal) Kathmandu and operated by Lalit Lama.
