Was channel surfing, and ran into a knife sale on this channel. The blades are a mixture of folding, sheath, and fantasy knives. Years ago they had Case, Hen & Rooster, and other name brand knives. The knives they have now appear to be junk. Am I missing something?:(

i am sure that you have seen that video of the man demonstrating a katana, bangs it on the table, and the tip breaks off and shoots into the man's chest. the other salesman calls for an ambulance, and then goes on to try to keep selling the sword.

the reason it looks like junk is because it is junk. people are more interested in bright colors and flashing lights than the quality of a thing. they will just end up losing it or throwing it away when it breaks soon enough anyways...why spend the extra money and buy a quality knife?

people don't get that knives are important, and so they fall for these cheap junk knives, like people fell for bic pens over a nice fountain pen, whatever the style. when they are lost or broken, they are easily and cheaply replaced.

I'm watching it right now. They're selling 5 folders and a fixed blade with G10 on the handles for 32.00 with a frost cutlery folding fillet knife as a "bonus". The "G10" isnt inlaid, its just pinned/ epoxied on.

I like watching tv "knife" shows just for the laughs. :D Don't hold your breath to see Benchmade, Spyderco, or brands like Kershaw on these shows. Quality is definitely not on their agendas because they are counting on gullible buyers, or salespeople to buy these knives to sell to gullible buyers at fleamarkets or Epay.

yup they are junk

BUT

You get ALOT for your $$$...Err quantity anyway...SO when ya break one every time ya use it, ya got LOTS of spares!

:)

Nope. Not missing a thing.

Is that the show with Tom O'Dell and some guy named Shawn? Are they still on it? They were hilarious.

I think once they had a passable knife (good brand, but I can't remember) as part of a package of other junk knives. They of course highlighted the good knife and glossed over the rest...

I think one time Shawn was telling a story of when they went to a fancy restaurant (in Nashville or Memphis) and had O'Dell's truck valet parked. And the bed was full of trash...

ROTFLMOA...

Tom O'Dell is one of the most unlikeliest commedians on tv. Funny thing is that he doesn't realize it! Tune in to one of his knife or coin shows to appreciate the humour of this "good ol boy." :D :D :D

This show has great value it provides flea market dealers with wares and people who know about knives alot of laughs.

All that has been said is true. Other outlets sell the same stuff for about the same price per unit, but in much smaller lots.

Why do I bring this up?.......... Cuz, about once a year I buy a dozen or so of the folders. They do an amazingly good job of cutting stuff like sand imbedded carpet, scraping gaskets, lending to people that barely know one end of a knife from the other and then abuse the he!! out of it. I give 'em away to people that have no real appreciation of a good knife. I also carry them as my primary knife, when I don't expect to use it much and may have to dispose of it in a hurry. I have not got that kind of money to do that with one that I've paid $100-$200 for.

Last year I was given a pair of $500 tickets to a stupid NFL game. My wife likes that sort of thing, so I took her to it, but everyone was being shaken down at the door. Big grin knowing people weren't going to forfet these high priced tickets for a $20+ knife (from Case to Benchmade, etc.) Then conviently loosing them whe n the owner returned for their property. I just opend the blade and incerted it betweenthe steel supports and snapped off the blade and tossed the remains in the basket. Security wasn't smiling about that, but then I was out only about $2.

I was watching last night and they started at $249 then came down to $199 for 187? knives! The guy just kept bringing out knife after knife then bowie knives then swords then knife stands and by the time it was done my wife and I were rolling on the floor laughing so hard I almost:barf: ed! A couple of hilarious parts were when he tried to flick open a knife and it wouldn't flick, a little while later hunting off camera for a calculator out to figure what 104 + 83 equals... Can't imagine shipping costs on about 2 tons of Chinese steel!:D

That slug wouldn't know an MS70 coin if it bit him on the ass! :D It also helps that HSC owns one of the grading services they use- I've seen some of their coins for sale after being regraded by a reputable service, and the HSC grade is ALWAYS 2-3 points high. Start selling PCGS-graded coins, and I'll listen.

Imagine this scenario:
Benchmade on TV:
"...and not only do you get the Benchmade Skirmish for $34.95, but call now and we'll throw in their premier model 940 Osborne for free! But Wait! That's not all! The first 500 callers will also get their deluxe fixed blade model 201+ Activator, engraved with your initials, as a bonus gift! Call now! Plus, mail in your $20 rebate coupon that will accompany your order and get all 3 knives for only $14.95! Yes, just $14.95! Pick up the phone and call now!!!!"
[Offer not available in China. First 500 orders based on a pre-set time limit of 29 seconds which has expired during the time this commercial aired. Visa, Mastercard, and Discovery accepted. Must be 18 or older to purchase.]

It's fine that you buy these knives(well, not really that you support this garbage), but giving them to unwitting people is decidedly unsafe. Unless you make it explicitly clear how unreliable and dangerous they are, which you don't indicate in your post.

It angers me that any self-respecting knifenut even considers buying this garbage, much less pushes it off on others. If you want a cheap knife to give to friends or use, buy one of the fantastic Byrd line. Well, they do cost twenty times as much.

Sword and Shield, I was referring to Shop-at-Home, and not HSN. Although, you are correct about HSN's coin grading service.
