Shop exhaust

My shop is the back end of my unheated (Michigan) garage. In another thread on dust collection someone mentioned hanging a Jet air filtration unit. Since I have no worries about losing conditioned air I was thinking of mounting a through-wall exhaust right behind my grinder to get rid of whatever my dust collector doesn't get (plus my cigar smoke!).

One like this.

Any good reasons NOT to do this?

That would clean your shop out!

I simply mounted a cheap box fan into the ceiling upside down (so it would pull into the attic) and attached an appropriate sized furnace filter to it to collect the dust. It has served its purpose for over a year now and works great. Cheap too!

I used a heater blower I got from a heating service co. It came out of an old heater they removed. I was in a no window shop with only one door. It would pull the door open if not latched properly. I figured it would replace the air every 2 or 3 minutes. They also have more than one speed. It was free and only took a couple of hours to hook up.

I did this same thing when I mounted my grinder. I used an attic fan....It worked great till the motor craped out from dust(never did build the filter holder I wanted). If the motor is enclosed it will be great. I think a filter is still a good idea....keep all that crap out of your yard...that way you don't have to ware a respirator while you cut the grass.

Cut the grass. Lol. I got tired of that and hauled in a bunch of red lava rock. I left a 3'x3' square of lawn. Thats my "yard"

After reading your replies it occurred to me that this is another of my typical cases of overkill. Let's see... I've got about 4000 cubic feet of air in my garage (including the "attic" area above the bare rafters). The unit at the link I posted pulls 800 cfm -- that's a full air change every 5 minutes. After a bit of research I found that the recommendation for garage ventilation is one air change every 3 to 10 minutes, and workshop recommendations fall in the range of 1 change every 2 to 5 minutes. Used intermittently (when grinding), the linked unit isn't excessively large.

It might make sense to put in TWO exhausts: One big one like the 800 cfm unit for use while the grinder is running, and a smaller one in the 100-150 cfm range for "whenever occupied" usage to minimize CO from my radiant propane heater and to keep the cigar stench down.

Thanks for the feedback.

i have an old blower motor from a furnace laying over the window well out of the basement. i hooked up some flex duct to a piece of blue styrofoam that fits over the window opening. (vacuum holds it in place since it has to be removed when i'm done) i have plastic sheeting up surrounding my area. the flex duct is mounted right below my grinder. it keeps the dust down and the smoke alarm from goign off every few minutes. this way i only need 1 fan.

That Jet air filtration unit is more for fumes from welding, acid bathing etc....... It's not going to help you much at all.

That fan will work, but you'll be ass cold, I mean ass cold...........

Here's my setup....

3hp exhaust setup (you can get a 2 hp one at harbor freight pretty cheap), then do this ......

4 inch pvc is all I use.....

I just use end caps to close it off when I want to go from station to station...

That setup will suck down a shot put, for sure...............
