Shop Filtration unit question

I built a 20''X30" filter box houses 5- 1'' filters
I was thinking of spraying high tack oil on the first course filter, to catch the really fine stuff. Oil to dust is like a magnet as you know.
Or placing 2 shallow pans in the box filled with oil. Any thoughts??

My unit turns the air over 12.5 times an hour.

A filter is only any good if it has sufficient air flow. A window fan isn't designed to have any filtration, but a single 1" filter won't slow the air flow too much. Putting 5 filters on will likely make it pretty ineffective. I would also not spray the filter with anything.

Now if you are running a big squirrel cage blower on a 1HP motor, then you probably can use 2", or even 3" of filters, but 5" is still way too much.

Yes I'm running a nice size squirrel cage not sure at the moment what size.
The way the filters are setup is the first is a 20 dollar job then cheaper ones follow down to a course permanent cut to size kind.
The unit moves air rather well. @ 20"X 30" I have room to place 2 cookie pans with cooking oil in the bottom, Im thinking air passing should collect a % of the smallest dust. Mess should be minimal, I would just clean the pans monthly. I know my OCD has kicked in a little here, but seems to me it would work.

My question would are the pans actually collecting anything prior to hitting the filters or just collecting shit that is blowing around/ falling off of the filters inside the box?

Air filtration involves a lot of technical information to be sure, for anyone who wants to have a good basic knowledge I highly recommend studying up on the Clear Vue website. One piece of equipment I can sing high praises for is the clear vue mini cyclone--I plan on getting a full on big boy clear vue one day, for now I have 3 shop vacs, 2 Feins and one Festool with the Clear Vue mini's on the front end of them. after over a year of use the most intense used vacuum is one of the Feins that does duty on my lathe and one of my 2x72 belt sanders and I recently checked in the Vacuum canister and there was absolutely zero dust or debris of any kind that had made it past the cyclone to the vacuum itself--pretty impressive to me.
I also have a Jet ambient air filter and it does a pretty good job of picking up what the Point of Tool vacuum/cyclones don't--which is pretty significant in the big picture--if I forget to power up my Jet, I'll end up with a coating of thick dust all over everything.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend putting any oil into the mix--I don't think there's a real upside to it. This and $3 will get you a small coffee at liberal-Bucks

Oil trays will be inside the box, Im talking about collecting micron sized dust that makes it through the filters back into the shop. Its the small stuff that kills you. Aside from exhausting the air from your shop replacing with fresh, you have micron sized debris floating around waiting to be inhaled when you remove your mask. Metal dust is persistent, meaning it doesn't go away on its own. A month from now I can kick the dust up and breathe it in. Im just trying to minimize the risk some.

I see what you're trying to achieve KUNTZ I just don't know if the oil pans will help you achieve it....if you look on Clear Vue's website, they have a detailed write up by the guy who started the whole biz. It probably has some insight to what you're considering.
