Shop Heat?

I live in the north-woods of Wisconsin, and it's starting to get to be that time of year. After considering wood, pellet and propane, I have decided to go with a Mr. Heater Big Maxx garage heater. It will hang from the ceiling which will give me more floor space, it also makes the insurance lady happy. I talked with my local HVAC guy and he said he would gladly install it for me, but he is recommending that I get the 75,000 BTU instead of the 45,000 BTU. My shop is also the garage and is 24x24 with 8' ceilings. The ceiling and walls are all insulated, as is the garage door. My plan is to keep the garage at about 45 degrees, and turn it up a little when I'm working out there. The spec sheet says that the 45,000 will heat up to 700 square feet, and it's $100 cheaper than the 75,000. Can anyone tell me if they have something similar to my situation. My HVAC guy said he thought the 75K would heat the garage up a lot faster, and that the 45K may not be able to keep up in the really cold weather.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Jess

My 40,000 BTU Modine heats 20x20' just fine. Ceiling is 11' on the high end. My
thermostat goes down to about 38 degrees, walk out in the morning turn it up to
67-68 degrees go in for a coffee and back out ready to go to work. If you're around
Shawano the temp is pretty close to ours.

Thanks Ken, I would love to see your shop sometime. I'm pretty cold blooded, and go most of the winter without a coat. It doesn't have to be hot in there, just not freezing cold. I'm going to save the money and buy the 45K model.

Anytime you're in the area give me a call or just stop in, usually doing something out there.
The coffee pot is always on.

Ken is one of the most helpful, nicest guys you will ever meet. It would definitely be worth the drive down.

PS: It helps if you bring chocolate filled long johns or bismarks.

The 45k will probably work but may have to work harder. It's possible you'd save some cash in the long run with the bigger one as it won't have to run as long in the really cold months. Maybe. Just throwing that out to think on.
