Shop makeover contest?

I save favors from my friends for tough stuff, i.e. moving machine tools/surface grinders out of basements, taking down trees, cleaning boat bilges, hiding bodies etc.

Syn

thanks for reminding me about the bodies. i need to find new places for mine. they are starting to stack up and i cant keep the vultures and IG away from them anymore. anyone want to help me get rid of mine? :D HEHEHE!!!!

I just built, or am building this new shop. Shop is 16' x 32'. I have the outside completed. I still have to wire it and build work benches and shelves. I decided I had to get everything out of the garage and into it's own place. This should serve my needs.

well i just finished up my smithy. all i had to do was clean off my work bench and put a few things back where they needed to go and made a few more holders for new things. the mini file holder and the handles on them are new from today. as you can see my work bench is very organized. i keep a small broom hanging from a screw so i can easily dust off my bench and equipment. i still need to get an air compressor but ill wait til i have an indoor shop. all my power is thru extension cords. well here are the pics. i hope its not too early to post them. you can ask the other guys here if it is recent. my new 2" vise is proof that it is recent. the 3/4" knife vise is not mounted to the 6" bench vise, its just an extra one i made.

hows it look?

Looka like a tidy shop to me........................

I like the idea of a work bench where you use all 4 sides instead of up against a wall like mine are (kinda like a kitchen island).

Nice pics btw. I suppose I will have to get to mine once I dig a path......

I do have a new problem though. I got an ASTOUNDING deal on a 6x12 surface grinder ( with a shithouse full of wheels, an industrial dust setup and some other stuff ) today and got a 70+ lb vise thrown in for free. Now I have to figure out where to put it when it gets here Saturday afternoon. Then I have to learn how to use it all over again. It's been awhile since I used one................ My tendency to want to take 1/8" bites like I do with a 3hp wood router setup in a table will have to be tempered, a lot.

i forgot to mention that the clamps you see on each end are for clamping the tarp down to the legs when i cover it up at night or for when its fixing to rain.

You are a trusting soul sir.........

I batten the hatches when it looks like rain.

i live out in the sticks and in a gated community. also its a brand new tarp. survived a bad hail storm already.

The only thing I would leave outside in the rain is tha nasty Rottweiler from down the block.............. scary dog. One reason I close the gate in my backyard. My cat wouldn't stand a chance if that sucker was roaming about. Of course then I would shoot it without a second thought. One 12 gauge slug and vaya con dios doggy.

Also, even though I live in a Chicago suburb, I don't leave portable tools/art etc laying about. No sense encouraging bad acts. The recycling system around here is amazing. You put something (anything really), potentially useful, or salable, out in the alley and 10 minutes later it's G O N E. Nice to live in a green suburb.

hows this for a safe neighborhood. i used to always leave my keys in the ignition, wallet in the car and windows down with doors unlocked out here. even in town i can do that. this is a small town and you dont have to worry about theft. only thing that you have to worry about is the few drug dealers.

but but but............... HEHEHE!!!! i cant help it if i have grass growing under my work bench. it is after all outside on the ground. :D

PS, your open air shop is looking better, but... you're not a big fan of elbow room, are ya? :D Maybe I'm just clumsy but I have a hard time working in that tight of an area.

My shop isn't ready for the after pic yet... I'm sitting here staring at a jumbled mess of dremel bits, files, scraps, and whatnot... and I'm at my desk, not even in the shop!

i have plenty of elbow room. i have no problem with my setup at all. as it is im still adding more and more mounts for stuff. i already added anotehr 2x4 with 2 holes drilled in it for the 2 main allen wrenches i need for my belt grinder and a slot for a file. i left extra room incase i need to add more. pretty soon ill be adding a 2x4 next to my drill press for drill bits. i also added leather to the jaws of the 2" vise and micarta to the 3/4" knife vise. finished bolting everything down to the bench except for that 3/4" knife vise because its just an extra one that i plan to mount to a 2x4 so you can clamp it in a vise or bolt the whole thing to a table. im not making mounts or hangers for my belts because i keep them inside out of the elements. so as you can see i have been busy with stuff. the file holder and allen wrench holder have both them water sealed.

Only one thing missin' Bro.....Wear and tear. You got to get busy and use that stuff. This weekend you will have no excuse - The shop is neat and tidy, you've got steel and belts. The weather will be good, and you can make knives !!! Get crackin' .
Stacy

In fact, I need to get in the shop this weekend.

this weekend i will be starting my new job. its just a popcorn job (cook at sonic) but its still a job to help get me by. my equipment tends to not show much wear and tear ever because i take care of my tools. HEHEHEHE!!!! i just took the jaws off my 6" vise and scraped the grime/rust off of them and then touched them up on the belt grinder. i also took the whole arm off and scraped it and such. i like to take care of my tools. but i did also find another use for my 1x30. fingernail trimmer. :D

Syn, how many pictures? I mean, are you talking just one overall shot of the place, or several shots of the several messy places? If more than one photo, then what is the limit? I have a headache.

Well.

I can either praise or blame you guys for kick-starting me... I got my desk cleaned off at least! :D

So, feeling cocky, I went down to the shop, put a fresh belt on the old Delta, and was gonna just make a few passes on my current project... well, it was a different brand than I had on before, didn't quite fit... yours truly must have over-tightened it... it ate steel like I eat Doritos for a few minutes... but then... I blew up the drive-pulley belt inside  I guess that's better than the grinding belt blowing up in my purty face.

Sooooo... anyone know where to get drive belts for a Delta 4x36?!? :( I got people waiting on this knife for a pass-around, but they may have to wait a little longer for me and Mr. Nicholson to finish the bevel...

BTW this mess is strictly operator error IMO... learn from my mistake, I guess.
