I had a day off tonight from work so I spent it in the shop aka the garage. A couple of things I learned or re-learned or finally accepted:

1) Dull belts sucks.
2) Aluminum heats up in a hurry on the belt sander.
3) Some days aren't meant for knife making no mater how hard you try.

And the most important thing I finally realized:

My skills will never improve if I keep changing the type of knife make. Pick one and make some until they start looking good. :(

yes to 1,2,3

i dont think you have to stay with one style intell you get good. what happens if you just suck at that style. try new things as much as you can, thats how you will learn and get better. keep grinding

I think you are right about some days not being ment to be a good day for knifemaking.
If you force yourself to go ahead you'll regret it the next day. Likely you will have spoiled your materials and previous work.
Turn off the lights and go and do something else.
Have a bottle of wine with the misses, it might turn out to be a good day after all.

Yes quit while you are still ahead, I learned that one the hard way early in the knifemaking game.

This is a good idea. I've probably made 70 of my little 6" skinner and they are finally starting to look decent.:D

I agree that some days arent meant for it. Knife making, blacksmithing, tinkering in general are my means of escape. its my zone so to speak. if i cant get into it and focus, i wont do good work. if my parents are trying to talk to me about something else stressful, i get very irritated and have to stop working. if i dont, i make crap. its best to take a break and wait till it feels good to work.

1) Dull belts sucks. (You can never have too many belts, sharp ones)2) Aluminum heats up in a hurry on the belt sander. Sharp belts help-see #1
3) Some days aren't meant for knife making no mater how hard you try. True although it get better over time
