I've heard people talking about their shop cat or dog, which made me wonder, does anybody have some more exotic shop pets? I have two chinese water dragons who help me make knives, see , so I guess maybe they count as shop pets.

Curly Sue (Tarantula) doesn't like the smell of grinding wood- she told me never to bring her into the basement again. I've already turned my girlfriend into a knife afficionado (sp?) but I think she would have a problem if I turned her Bearded Dragon into one as well!

my dad has Clem, the bullhead catfish in his 100 gallon tank on one side of our shop :)

when i was a kid i kept a big glass jar out there too with a black widdow in it. would catch a bee for it every day and it would be fat enough to live through seasons when bees are hard to find.

I have a Sun Conure, a small yellow south American parrot, she sits on my shoulder a lot while I am in the shop. She squawks at a few jobs but, is generally well behaved and will jump down to do her jobs. If I am working in the shop and her cage is open she will often walk out and find me. She had her wings clipped all the time when young and never flys. My dogs are friendly with her and respect her beak.

Oh come on now, for us spider guys that isn't good enough, what kind is she? I assume from the name she may be a curly hair (Brachypelma albopilosum)? That is one speicies that I never kept, are they skiddish or docile?

Kevin- you are right!! She is fairly skittish- runs across my shoulders VERY fast, and as a result does not get much interaction. She usually comes out of her cave 1-2 days per month and likes to hide the rest of the time. She was not supposed to be mine- I bought her for my 5 year old cousin a few years ago. When I was in university studying Entomology I had an aquatic invertebrates collection class and I would show Melissa what I caught before killing them and preserving them for ID. After a short while she began to collect all of the spiders she found to show off to me. I taught her as much as I could about arachnids and she absorbed it like a sponge. I told her Mom that I was going to get her the tarantula for X-mas. I guess nobody believed me until I walked into the house with her! Well- a month later Melissa explained to me that she did not need the tarantula any more as she was getting a puppy!! I wonder who gave her that idea??

My Sons 4ft long Ball Python got loose a couple years ago. All I find in my shop is some snake skin now and then.

For 6 years I had a pair of Ferrets, both males, that shared my basement workshop, as part of their hunting territory. They make great pets. Sleep about 12-16 hours a day, use a littlerbox, and don't bark. However!! They can and will get into everything. Closed cabinets, covered boxes, you name it and they will find a way into it. They love to steal small things, and hide them away in some out of the way place, like under the basement stairs, or inside a couch or big chair. This problem forced me to put everything away in high cabinets, and not leave anything out on my work tables. As a result, I had a very well organized, and clean workshop, but spent a lot of time getting supplies out, and then putting them all back.

They have both passed away, as they have rather short life spans. I do miss the chaos they brought into my life, but not enough to go out and get 2 more. I've replaced them with a small dog, Maggie by name, who demands more of my time, playing fetch. Which forces me to stop working on knives, and take a break. I find these breaks are good for the soul, and keeps the work of meeting dead lines and delivery dates, as part of the joy of building knives.

Season's Greetings To All,

Best Regards,

I am just about to make my first knife, so don't know if they count as shop pets yet...but I do have lots of critters around. Their babies have actually been paying for my knife purchases lately :) Anyway, here are just a few:

Cool pets. All I've got for shop critters is 4 semi feral cats that stay around and catch mice and like to wander in when I leave the door open.
