After seeing Itrade's spotless shop in a recent thread, I figured it was time to see some of you all's shops (please be dirty, so I don't feel bad about mine. :D ) I know some of you guys have pics of your shops on your websites, but go ahead and post them in here if you can.

I'll post my very dirty shop tonight if possible. :D

There is one pic of my old workshop in my website, I cant post pic's directy so have look yourself. My new shop is little, just little more cleaner but one has to be carefull to see the differens...:p

That's what I'm talking about! It ain't a shop unless there is a layer of dust over everything.

Aaron -- I can post it if you take it.

Hey Burch, I've seen your shop. It doesn't count as a dirty shop, since you can still walk around in it. Now, mine is a mess! I will take a pic this afternoon, and we shall see who wins the dirty shop award.

You all have probably seen these pics before, but what the heck, I'll post them again. It has been a few months since these have been taken and the shop hasn't been cleaned yet. The biggest difference between then and now is that these pictures don't show the mound of copper and NS chips on the mill from doing that mokume for the colaboration hunter.

And the HT Oven has been scavenged to use the firebricks in my molten salt HT set up. Man I need to clean, maybe I can talk the little woman into doing it? Yeah right, like that will happen.;)

Probably be a coupla weeks before I can post pics, but will give some idea of what can be done in an apt.

Don't have my own digital cam, so borrow friends. Try to wait till I have more than one thing I'm taking pictures of though, so waiting until I finish redoing this khukuri I'm working on.

Hey Laredo, what's that weird looking stick with straw stuck to the bottom of it used for? :D

You got some nice equipment there -- how long has taken you to stockpile your stuff?

That stick and straw thing is what the little woman rides to work.:D  :D But don't tell her I said that.;)

The anvil is out of frame in the fisrt picture, but that was the hardest thing to find. It is a 152# Hay Budden. Lets see, this December will be two years since I got interested in making knives and I think I started building forges and trying to find stuff in early 2001. So it has taken me a year and a half to 2 years to collect all my "junk"

Here is my list:

Forge - Home made with Ron Reil style Burner
Power Hammer - 25# Little Giant (1922) reconditioned and new dies made out of S7
Anvil - 152# Hay Budden made in 1913.
Bench Vise
Molten Salt HT equipment
Chop Saw
5HP Phase converter
Grinder - Burr King 760 with 8" contact wheel and VFD.
Small Drill Press
Small Arbor Press
Wilton 14 inch metal/wood cutting bandsaw
2 hp RF-31 Mill Drill
Buffer
8 inch metal shear
Broom

I think that is about it, not bad for 18 months. Now I need to find a good deal on a small metal lathe and surface grinder. Anybody got any leads?

Hey Laredo, what are your thoughts on the RF-31 having used one for how ever long? Would you recommend saving the extra money for one of those over the smaller chinese bench-top mills? Weird you posted that picture because I have been longing for this one on ebay. Where did you get yours and how much if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks,
Ric

RF-31 on Ebay

George, you ol'dog you've got the rotary platen!!! Does it grind pretty flat?? Man I covet one of those. Darn, I do like my Coote though. That KMG rotary platen fascinates me. It looks real cool.

You guys don't really want to see my setup. It would make you feel sorry for me. Really, it really is in my living room. I got the 27 inch TV. The radio for my daily dose of Rush, the computer, two work benches, a small forge, the mill, the bandsaw, the edge grinder, the Coote 2 X 72, the couch, the recliner, the end mills, the this, the that, the wall cabinet for more tooling, the etcher, di-da-di-da etc.. At least the dewar is in the basement and the HT oven and temper oven is in the kitchen. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the carpet :barf:. It is probably true; I need to be put away.

Ric-

That is the same guy I bought mine from. He will charge you shipping no matter if you pick it up or not since they are shipped over from the west coast.

The only problem I had with mine was the fuse/reset on the motor kept tripping out when trying to use the highr speeds. The ebay seller was great and sent over another motor, but it did the same thing. The only thing that solved it for me was to hook it up to 220V. When the motor was triping out it probably didn't help that it was 45 degrees in my basement and I was trying to fire the thing up off of a 100 foot extension cord.

Anyway, I have not had a problem since then and I have been happy with it. It seems to be accurate to a couple thou over six inches or so, more than what I need for what I do.

I would definitely buy one over the smaller mini mills if you can afford it. The kicker is that I actually had a full sized Bridgeport style (the actual brand was wells index) that I bought for $500. But there was no way I could get it into my basement, so I sold it and bought the RF-31 and the wilton bandsaw with the profits. Worked out great!

I also bought my tool holders and vice off of eBay for cheap. The vise is no Kurt, but it works good enough for me. I think I got the vise from seller JTSmachine (or something like that).

Hope that helps.

Edited to add:

Here is the vise I got:

Thanks! I don't know what I am going to get yet. If we ever get the shop finished I may go for a full sized bridgeport or something. A CNC Taig sounds like a lot of fun also. The Rong-Fu is a good sized unit that could be moved around a lot easier than a full sized mill.
I have plenty of time to think about it, I'm broke as sin anyway. :D

RL: The rotary platen and 14" wheel I very seldom use. I am addicted to flat grinding. I know Fitzo uses his for plunge cuts. The thing works great and I am sure I will use it more in the future for convex grinds.

Nice shop pix guys!!!
I'll post some as soon as I finish reorganizing. I finally figured out that it would be so much more convenient to have supplies on one end of the shop and tools on the end I work on instead of having both strewn all over the place. I bought some 8 foot sections of those wire shelves and put them on the wall opposite where I work and they're perfect for storage.
George, is it hard to get used to setting pins with that press instead of piening with a hammer? I'd be splittin g10 with it till I got used to it, lol.
Hey, that is a real nice blast cabinet! Looks like it's plastic too, I like that! Been looking for a plastic one but can only find metal. Decided to try makin one out of a cooler. Hey, I have a tip for you that the Jones boys posted here a while back that will save the glass in your blast cabinet or the plastic on your face shield. Cover the exposed side with some of those clear films they use to make transparencies with. You can get them at any office supply store. That keeps the grit from hitting the glass and when they get buggered up you just change em out and your glass stays nice and clear.

Sorry Burch, I think I got ya beat in the "Sloppiest Shop" award. Try and find a path through, I dare ya! :)

See that big cardboard box sitting on the bottom left side? That is my digital controlled Evenheat oven. Been sitting there for 2 years! Maybe, if I clear a spot over by the back door(where the 220 outlet is), I will someday open it up. :)

Oh yea? Well, check out the wall of chainsaws! Long story not as short as it could be, my dad used to cut wood for a guy that had a boat dealer/chainsaw repair shop. Dad would cut him deals on wood and he would give dad parts when he needed them. The guy decided to quit messing with chainsaws and gave my dad a couple hundred chainsaws and parts. Knee deep chainsaws everywhere in the only place I have room for a sort of shop till we get the new one built. He said I can sell them on ebay, but only he knows what parts are what and what chainsaws run and he won't go through them. Seriously, knee deep with no walking room except for a few paths. Small basement though.
Anyone need any chainsaws and/or parts to trade for knife supplies and/or knives? Jonsenrud's(SP?), Husky's, you name it. :D

ok Danbo, you got me beat. I may have to bring some more stuff from the shed into the shop to compete!

Btw - I emailed you to get your cell number. I'm not sure if I have it.
