Shop Pictures

Great shop! That's a great surface grinder, how did you find one in such good shape? And how long did it take you to wax everything?! :D

Dave

Nice shop Bubba. One thing you don`t work in there
do you? Man it`s to clean, hell the only time mine
was ever that clean was the first day I set it up.
And then that was just for about a hour:rolleyes: :D :D :D

Wow what a set up. Most hospitals are not as clean or well equiped. I'm inpressed. Not even a bit of clutter to make it look lived in.

Well done. I like the mods on the band saw. I have a sheet metal tray about half way down to store my off cuts on. It also acts as a brace
. I see you have a wood frame around the bottom Im sure that would do
the same job.
Thanks for the look.

Andrew: Very nice. In particularly like your workbenches. Are they home made or purchased?

Too Clean??? I found that when things start getting disorganized I get distracted so I spend a few minutes picking up. On of my beliefs is that more energy goes into being disorganized then staying organized.

Dave, the surface grinder took a couple of years of steady looking to find. I just saw another one sold on eBay this past week. It needed some paint and clean up, but it sold for only $200. Mine was off eBay also and went for $850. It's worth every bit of $1,500.

Reg, the base on the band saw is mostly to allow mw to roll it under my backbench when I'm not using it. It did make the frame a little stiffer.

RJ, the benches where all shop built. 4"x4" legs, 6"x2" skirts, 2"x4" cross bracing top and bottom, and 1/2" finish plywood tops. Should last a lifetime. I recently filled the dings and repainted the tops. Took a few hours to repair three years worth of wear. I like stuff that can be fixed back up.

I am 22 now, but when I retire maybe I can afford something like that. Right now I think I will stick to my files.

Beautiful shop! Did you modify the disc sander to be reversible?
Geeze, your making all of us look like slobs!!!:D :D :D

Andrew
I to prefer a neat shop,I now were everything is,Very slick trick you did with the grinder stand.I did the same thing with my buffer
stand.

;)

Andrew good idea, I saved an eBay search for myself. Eventually I'll find one too. Thanks for a great idea.

Dave

Roy, the disk grinder came with reverse. It was made by AMT (American Machine and Tool). It’s been a couple of years since I received one of their catalogues, so I'm not sure if they are still in business.

Dave, I checked eBay earlier today and they have two machines like mine listed. One is my machine exactly selling from North Carolina, and the other is a newer model made by Rockwell. I'm guessing Delta split off. The Rockwell machine looks pretty good. I went to pick my machine up before I parted with the cash so it made it a little easier to close the deal.

I better go mess the shop up some.

Hi this is DaQo'tah

yes, thats a mighty clean shop you got there....

Now I have made only a few knives in my life yet, but so far I have noticed that when I make a knife, before Im done, I got "Knife Mess" in every room of the house,,,my work bench has got so much junk on it , that I end up actually working in a very small area near the edge. The Kitchen table is also burried under "Knife Mess"

The floor of my shop by the end of a day making knives,,,is a twisted mess of cords, sand paper, and paper towels.

The garbage can needed cleaning, oh, about a year ago,,I now have kinda a compost pile going on where I 'think" the garbage can is.

I love it Andrew! :)

I kept my shop that clean all the time when I was doing stock removal.

Since I started forging it's a lot harder to do....10 times more dust from the chop saw, 9" angle grinder...then dripping molten salt and oil from heat-treating on the floor.

But I still manage to keep it pretty clean. I get in "pre-show-mode" where everything gets put down instead of away...and then I spend more time looking for it! So I totally agree with your belief about the energy spent being disorganized.

The first maker I met told me that clean knives come from a clean shop. He always spent part of Monday cleaning. I've always heard the Japanese smiths spent part of the morning sweeping to clean and feel connected with the shop...so I do the same thing.

Thanks for sharing Andrew!
Nick

I admire that shop!...cool tools and nice and clean...looks very nice to work in!.....Me...I clean every now and then.....but it nevers gets that clean.....heck the table I have my bandsaws on have gained about 6 inches of cutof pieces and dust....4 feet wide :)

I always remember my shop teacher way back in high school days trying to instill in us that "A clean shop, is a happy shop!" You must be one of the HAPPIEST knifemakers around! I also feel it shows in your finished knives - very nice!

Enough is Enough !!!! Your're giving me a complex.
That is one fine looking shop. The only one nicer that I have seen is Daryl Hibbens. He has separate "clean" and "dirty" rooms and is incredibly well organized. I think the "piece de resistance" is the pool table he has in the middle of the large "clean" room.

This gives me the Idea that the rest of us that are Slobs should post pictures of our respective disaster areas that we call shops. If we can still make knives under conditions that would make our mothers dis-avow any knowledge of who we are may be some others will be encouraged not to give up their attempts due to lack of "proper" equipment or work areas.

Right now my shop looks like hell and the temperature in it is 10 below zero. (wind chill outside is 22 below zero). We refer to this part of Ontario as the Banana Belt so I'd hate to think what some of you makers that are farther north are going through. I will go out and try firing up the kerosene heater in a bit and take a picture.

Once again Nice Shop. One day I hope to be that organized.

Is that the shop you have just for show or when company comes over? And in the back you another shop with metal pieces and dust and beer cans and more dust and used up grinder belts and and and... where you really make the knives? ;-)

I'll never show my shop again! If cleanliness is next to godliness, I'm in Hell!

Andrew,
Just invite us Jones Brothers over anytime you want to mess the place up;) :D .

Do you do ANY work in there?
Probably spend just as much time cleaning as you do makeing folders.
