Well I'm short on funds to do anything on my 2x72 grinder and have a need for a shop press. I Have some leftover steel from the grinder and part of a beam I salvaged off of my brothers rehab job on a condo in Myrtle Beach a few months back. I also just acquired an old 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" solid bar stock trailer axle that had been sitting behind a neighbors barn for some years. Unfortunately I have been welding so much lately I ran out of welding wire again and this is far as I can go till I get some wire.

I have 22" in height between the beams and 15" from upright to upright of clearance. This should be enough room for anything I typically have needed one for.

Since only have a light duty welder and cant get super great penetration on the 1 1/4" uprights, I'm going to use the excess steel from the flange of the beam to make gussets on the top and bottom connections.. I previously cut out about 32" off the flat part of the beam and welded them together to make the platen on my grinder. I'll eventually clean the corners off so there aren't any sharp corners and give it a cleaner look.

I had about 14" of angle left over from the grinder build I'll use as the feet.

For image purposed you can see part of the axle I'll use as the cross beam with the pressing tool. I probably won't use the axle spindle in the image as it's bent which you can't see in the image. I am curently doing a CV axle job for a friend and am considering cutting the end of the axle off with the threads and splines as it is good hard steel, and in better shape that this.

I am also going to need to find or purchase some steel and reinforce the top and bottom beams where the chalk marks are. I currently only have a 6 ton jack, but have no doubts when it's all said and done, I should be able to up it to a 12 ton jack. I'll probablt get one of the air/hydraulic ones from harbor freight.
