Shop safety AGAIN! Please read.

What minimum level mask would you all reccomend for a newbie, who will be doing "now and then" grinding at most? Looking at 25$ respirators (I imagine you'd need more than a disposable dust mask), thinking that will be enough for one knife and occasional (like a couple times a month) grinding for misc. project work, am I wrong?

I don't have a lot of money, but don't want to be blowing my nose black ever again (worked construction a while ago, cellulose insulation attics stink)
Thanks!

EDIT: And I'll be shaving before wearing it...don't wear a beard.

With all due respect to those who will inevitably disagree, the only safe level of protection is a well-sealed cartridge-based filter system. If you have a beard, it has been proven time and time again that even they don't work 90+% of the time because they don't seal. In the corporate world, OSHA specifies that "half-mask respirators are not compatible with facial hair", so you can't have a beard. The little dust masks don't seal for s**t, period. That leaves one with PAPR respirators (powered blowers).

Thus, in the $25 range I'd say go to a Home depot, Lowes, or whatever, and buy one of the cartridge masks. If you have a beard, shave. If not, well, at least it'll filter some and the lung problems will be put off maybe a whole year or two.

This is nothing to mess around with. Take it from someone who's made the mistake already and has had it totally alter their life in a downward spiral. Everyone's been warned here time and again. If people don't listen, that's their problem. I've got a saying:

"Ya makes yer own choices and ya takes yer own lumps."
