Shop talk bs: what have you traded a knife for?

Traded my first damascus fighter to a gun dealer for a 22-250 Steyr, polished hammer-mark varmint bbl, thumb through stock, dbl set triggers, 3x18 Leupold. Tack driver. Nice trade. Wish I still had both, especially the knife. Don't let go of the important "milestone" knives in your journey.

Was going to trade a machete for a 9mm m1 carbine repro my shooting buddy bought but didn’t like much. I lived in NJ and if you wanted to own an m1 carbine that’s all you could get because of our ban list.

Ended up moving out of the state recently so that trade isn’t happening. But I can own a real m1 now so even better! Gotta make sure I get that machete done soon and send it out to my buddy anyways… maybe he’ll trade me some pizza from home…🤔

Trade is a big word in itself. Now I've made knives and gave them to folks that have paid back 10 fold or more. I once earned bow hunting rights on a private farm in Ohio. No lease, free room and board that I made a stabilized corn cob handled kitchen paring knife for. Now I did do tons of free electrical work for him also but the fat penguin (one that broke the ice, when asking permission was the knife). Killed several big bucks and saw literally hundreds of other big bucks in a decade of hunting. It was awesome till the Amish surrounded him. Amish folks don't think the laws apply to them or at least that's what I have personally experienced.

I once made another kitchen paring knife for a fine lady that worked for the local university that found grant money for college students to help pay for college. Let's just say she saved my family a ton of money. Twins in college at the same time. Money that basically no one knows is available to students of the university. We was introduced to this fine lady by a mutual friend. She helped my twins so much I sent her a kitchen knife. Wow is all I have to say for the amount of money she helped my twins with after the gift knife. Those are the first two that come to mind but I'm sure there is several others.

Trades I've never done so far. But the doors opened by gifting knives for me has been HUGE!

Traded one to a massage therapist for sessions that were transferred to the missus. Keeps her from asking too many questions about how much I'm spending on my hobby.
Gave one as a thank you to a friend who had given me a bunch of venison. He decided that it was too much and gave me another backstrap. This also keeps the missus happy.

Trading is in the cowboy DNA thing.

Some cash and two kitchen knives for a friend to paint this door as she is a chef ya see on TV now and then, as well as an artist. It was that stupid white glass door that says Pantry on it. You know the one. No mas:

She used pics that she had taken from our ranch so these are some of our horses:

She was just suppose to paint the outside but she got carried away. The door frame and the base boards were white too and she painted them oak. Then on top- of that painted the inside of the door too:

Course then the kitchen island had to lose its white plates on the electric sockets. She painted them oak to match too:

Traded two bocote handled knives for this board of bocote left and a very large board of mesquite on the right:

Traded three bowies for this 100 percent beaver custom handmade hat. It would of've been out of my price range otherwise:

These two young cowboygirls come out and help a lot at the ranch. Made a sheath for one and a headstall for the other in exchange for their help:

The hat here that may wife Nichole is wearing too, was a trade. Traded a set of steak knives for it. It too is 100 percent beaver and custom made for her:

This was her 50th birthday and we're is shown with her favorite singer Dave Stamey. We'd hired him to do a private concert in our backyard for her birthday. It was a complete surprise to Nichole. First she knew of it was when he rang the doorbell. That was pretty cool.

We traded part of his fee off too for the concert for some leather goods. No knives that I remember.

Just a few trades recently off the top of my head.

Many other knives, knifemaking supplies and tools, artwork, books, a mobile phone, a notebook, clothes, sunglasses, dinners at a local restaurant, etc - as you see, it seems like a pretty bad case of addiction to trades.
But lately I have not done any trading. Maybe its time to check the trading forum ;-)

I have only made a couple of trades and I always feel like I ended coming out ahead.
I traded a blade for a lightly used pair of Abel fishing pliers and another blade for a couple of waterproof backpacks. All of it is gear that I wanted but never wanted to buy for myself.

I just started, but my father-in-law has already offered to trade me a Glock 19 for a knife, and a good friend who's a bowyer offered to trade me a handmade Osage orange recurve. I am not going to rush to make those trades, because I want to know I am making something proficiently first, but I hope to get there relatively quickly.
