I was cleaning up a little bit in the shop yesterday when I noticed that my acid container for etching damascus was left open. I thought that was kinda odd until I remembered that I only take the lid off when I'm etching a blade. Then it dawned on me, I had left a blade in there! Overnight probably wouldn't have been too bad, but I put it in there a week ago!

Here's what is looked like:

I took it out and did a quick bath to neutralize the acid, and this was about how it looked two minutes later. I think I'll keep a better eye on this next time. The blade was about 10 inches overall made out of a 224 layer damacus combo of 1095 and mild.

I guess I didn't say it before, but the shop tip is not to forget that you have a knife sitting in acid!

Ouch!!!!
Have you tried to clean the blade up any after this.I don't think it should have hurt it structural wise, but you definately got a good DEEP etch on it....

Oh man! This is the best one yet.

I've managed to make some scrap out of perfectly good materials but I've yet to dissolve anything.

I used mild just for fun. I was playing with different mixes. (5160 and 1095 is the best mix I've done so far.)

I'm not sure if I can still finish it or not. When looking at the spine or at the edge, it kinda looks like a loosely stacked deck of cards. I'll clean it up tomorrow and see how it looks.
