So I ruined my last cell phone, and I need a new one.

I keep my cell in the side pocket of my Carhartt jeans. The last one ALWAYS had metal slivers stuck to the speakers because of the magnets.

So if you've got a phone that seems to stand up to the conditions of a knife/fab shop, I'd sure like to hear which one! Thanks!!! :)

FWIW- I actually annihilated the last one in the washing machine... NO, I don't expect any of them to stand up to that! ;) :o

my Original Droid with screen protector seem to hold up well. and I just wipe a magnet across the speker to get the shavings out of it. :D

dear nick wheeller you have the same problem i used to have

get yourself a casio ruggidized phone
mine is a Gz one and has been a tank (no it does not surf the web but i can wash it off every night after work )

its still going strong (sept for the batt. is not holding a charge all week anymore)

im thinkng about upgrading to the new style but since i have not killed this one im going to wait

iPhone+Otterbox Defender has worked great for me. Phone has been dropped several times, splashed with water, spent quite a bit of time in a machine shop, and has gone on a couple off-roading trips with me while serving as GPS.

Get any phone you like, even a Droid!
Then invest in an Otterbox Defender Case. Those things are damn near bullet proof.

I run A Gz one phone. You can throw it across the room or drop it in a bucket of water and it will keep on working
On the speakers, every once in a while I will run a good sized rare earth magnet around the speakers for a while. It will pull all the metal dust away from the speaker magnets

I don't work in an indoor shop but I have had zero problems with my Blackberry Bold 9000, the magnets on the case seem to catch all the filings and metallic dust. I haven't dropped it yet so I don't know how tough it is that way

Samsung Rugby II from ATT. Mil spec for moisture, dust, shock, roadside bombs, nukes, and your mother in law's bad cooking. Might fair well in the washing machine considering all of that. This phone is a rock.

Basically any mil spec phone from any carrier will fit the bill. The Droid in the otter box is cool, but full touch screen phones are NOT that durable, and have to come out of the box sometime.

The toughest cell hone that I know about is Sonim. Here is cnet review with the video. But for that money you can buy several cheap ones and just replace them when they break.

Wow guys, thanks for all the response! :) I had never heard of those Casio phones but they look like they'd be just about perfect for me.

I was one of the knuckle draggers that refused to get a cell phone until about 2006. When I went in to buy one back then, they tried to dazzle me with all these goofy ass features.

I told them I just wanted one that I could talk on, I didn't want it to pretend to be a camera, or a microwave, or a big screen TV... just a phone. Of course I'm guilty of getting sucked into texting and taking pics with the damn phone every 10 minutes.... but it is what it is. (teh gey...ROFLMAO) ;)

I had a pretty simple Nokia that was VERY tough and was still going strong when I switched carriers and got a piece of crap LG flip phone that I broke after a couple weeks. This one I just killed was an LG ENV2 and I liked it ...but still too delicate for the stuff I do (washing machine withheld ;)).

If those Casio "ruggedized" phones will hold up to big Jim... then I won't even put a scratch on one!!! :)

That Sonim looks really cool too. I love the bit at the end of the vid where the lady is trying to beat on it with a board, LMAO :D

I'll look into the others also... As cool as stuff like Iphones and all their aps and stuff are, I'm just worried I'd kill one.

Thanks for the info guys! :)

untill Droid "does not die in my shop"
and does take pictures and link them right to my site (think of how easy WIPs will be )

i will jsut stick with my phone that makes calls

:) Very low tech, but I just put my Blackberry in a Ziploc snack bag while in the shop. The Otterbox is a great product, just to bulky for me.

I had a G'zone for 2 years, but it's reception, battery life, and voice clarity were not the best. It was TOUGH....I once dropped it out of the truck window while I was headed down the road near home.....at about 35mph. I watched it bounce several times on the pavement....when I turned around and picked it up, I expected it to be trashed....but aside from a couple of scratches, it worked fine.
This past spring when we renewed our contract I went with a Samsung Convoy. It's been a surprisingly great little phone. Even leaving it on 24/7 I only charge the battery once a week, and it gets signal where my old G'zone would never work. I went to our local Ace Hardware store and purchased a NiteIze belt case to protect it, and have been happy all the way around.

I believe the G'zone's are mil-spec IPX-8. Mine's been tough as nails. They finally came out with a full keyboard version.

I have an HTC Aria, I made a leather belt scabbard for it that keeps rain dust, shavings off of it, I have to fine-tune the design a bit but so far really good
