I think they were going for impact absorption, but all it ends up doing is wobbling too much for light work. Choking up onto the metal collar does work, but on a cold day in the shop it can be rather hard on the hands. The main reason my Stohlman gets so much use, its lighter by a good amount and balanced so much better
