Shopping for a purse...don't look if you consider yourself a man.

My wife and I have our 9th anniversary coming up, and like any good husband does, I waited until the last minute to figure out what to get her. Modern gift for 9th anniversary says leather, and she's brought up a new Coach purse a few times. Now I'm stuck doing something I never thought I'd do. Shopping for a purse. I'm looking at getting her some limited edition purse they don't make any more that she's mentioned more than once. It looks like I can pick one up for about $800.

Does this seem like something that would make a good anniversary gift to you guys, and is that a ridiculous amount of money for a purse? To me, it is, but then again almost every firearm I own was more than that, and I own a lot. It certainly won't break the bank, but I never knew an over-sized wallet could cost so much. Anyone ever bought something like this and get the silent treatment? Keep in mind, I'm in Afghanistan, so I can't take her out for a nice dinner/make dinner, take her on a trip or do anything but send flowers and buy her something nice.

I know my wife, and I think she'll like it, but I just wanted to hear some thoughts, and maybe a reassurance that I'm not crazy for dropping gun money on a purse.

Go for it. If you know she likes it and you can afford it, it will make an excellent gift. She will be very pleased.

I am not married but I will say that if you have found a good wife, which it sounds like you have, she is priceless.
So if she likes it, get it.

I hope you get home soon, Buckeye.

From someone that has been married to the same woman for 39 years, if it is something she would enjoy, and most women value their purses like we value our guns, knives, etc, then you will forever be her hero. You are already her hero, but this will be special and she will talk it up with her female friends forever. Win Win for you and her.

By the way, you are our hero too for serving your country and protecting us at home. Special Blessings and return home safe soon.

Blessings,

Omar

I've bought coach purses for women before...not the $800 ones, but coach :) They're like a fine, hand forged blade, incredibly high craftsmanship and will last a lifetime...unless your wife is hard on purses/shoes/clothes. Even if she IS super hard on purses/shoes/clothes, it will still last longer than most :) My tip would be to either buy the exact one she wants or get her a certificate for coach and let her choose. I would rather get a cert. for a knife shop than a knife someone picked out, thinking I would like it. Hope this helps

Thanks for all the input guys. I went ahead and bought it for her. Some exactly like it were going for up to $1400. Craziness, but I guess I understand it.

Good move. It is better to buy it for her than to give her a gift certificate. Buying the purse she said she likes means you were listening to her! :D

Yeah, I got her the exact one she's mentioned, or at least I think I did. Let's hope my memory and my Google skills are up to task.

On your way back from A'stan, during the couple days you're going to be stuck at Ali in Kuwait, hitch a ride over to the Naval Base (KNB). Go to the Haji-mart, and visit the second booth on the left, just past the barber. You can get her a couple more for $30-$40. Make sure he shows you the stuff under the counter (not on display).

Haha, thanks for the tip, but I will likely fly through Dubai on my way out (I'm a civilian now). Last time I was in Dubai, I was still in and it was on a MEU. I don't remember seeing any good prices on anything there. They have too much money in that country. Might be worth flying through Kuwait just to check that place out.

Coach!? Get her a Maxpedition! jk jk But yeah that sounds like a great idea. To sweeten the package I say throw in a gift card to Sephora.

Nicely done!

I just take her to the Coach store and let her shop - they love that (like one of us in a knife shop kinda' thing...) and she gets to pick out the one she likes.

God bless her, but I would NEVER pick out the one she chooses - and for that kind of money, I want her to be the one that picks it out.

You are a good man - and just the fact that you took the time to find out what anniversary #9 was means a lot.

By the way, Coach also has belts for men.

Something else to consider, $800 in purse money is roughly equal to $1200+ in gun money! My wife has a favorite designer that I have paid for his unborn child's college tuition in buying purses and art from. One $350 purse is equal to a new pistol for me! At least guns can provide food and protection in times of need. Can't say that about a Simone Legno purse or Coach in your case. Granted, its not a balance of power type thing, but it sure makes the conversation go smoother if she has recently gotten something she enjoys, but doesn't need.

Congrats on 9 years! Start saving for next years purse now... :D

nice job OP

even the fact you looked up the right one she wanted and were listening to her ramble about the purse means you won.

Your lucky all she wants is a Coach purse and not a Balenciaga. You think 800 bucks is a lot for a purse? That's like mid range at best. Try a couple thousand. It may not be understandable for us guys why purses are so coveted, but on the same token, I doubt many women understand why a guy can spend several thousand on __________ (insert firearm maker of choice) gun.

I think she's hinted enough that if you know exactly which bag it is that she wants, that you should get brownie points from the wife for getting said bag.

Thanks guys. I've actually got her convinced we are just going to celebrate our anniversary with a quiet dinner when I get home on leave next month. She should be surprised by this, and I also have about $500 worth of roses being delivered to her today as well.

I've actually managed to get her into kayaking, hiking and camping, but she usually just uses one of my bags. I always end up carrying most of the gear anyways. :)

Our 10 year anniversary is actually something I've had planned out for awhile. When we got married, I was a broke Lance Corporal with about a year in the Marine Corps. We ended up just doing a courthouse wedding, our families had a nice reception for us and our honeymoon was the hotels we stopped at on our way to my next duty station in Arizona from Ohio. I'm going to give her a real wedding with a new ring and a honeymoon she deserves. She has no idea I'm planning this.

No, the worst ripoff other than whatever they wouldn't let Oprah check out in Switzerland are those hideous little Judith Leiber clutch bags. $6k+ for one shaped like a little rhinestone encrusted conch shell. I kinda get the general idea of a big Coach, Burberry, Fendi (barely) or Dooney and Bourke bag even though they are pricey. Hell, I even get the Luis Vuitton stuff that doesn't have the logo plastered all over it. But not stuff like Leiber.

Come on. Give some pics. We're all interested in seeing 800$ worth of leather :-). I'm sure they say the same on purse forums about our knives....
