Well today the temperature was up to -15 with no wind, so me and the wife decided to go for some snowshoeing/ picnic. I also wanted to do a short review of My new Ml woods and bush i had bought.
The knife in question as it arrived

We got packed and headed out.

Once we arrived at the river we got set to go, snapped a few pictures and realized that the camera batteries where in the red! no worried I say, we will use the AA batteries from my mini maglight. and off we went.

Here we are at the car

So we walked on the frozen river for a while, and i decided to not take pictures because i wanted to keep the battery life for the knife review. After about 35 minutes walking we decided to stop and make some lunch. and i would put the knife through its paces.

Here is the fire making

And here is the ONLY PICTURE I TOOK OF THE KNIFE ( i will explain)

So as i was starting my knife review, the camera died. hahaha, as you guys can see i put a proper lanyard on the knife and i also modified the handle to include a thumb ramp because i found the handle to be to high to properly hold it for a few types of cuts.

The knife worked great for food preparation. it is a true slicer we made some fresh salmon, cooked up some mushrooms and onions with tomatoes and piled it all on a kaiser bun for one unbelievably tasty sandwich.

After lunch i made up a few fuzz slicks, whittled some sticks for my wife's marshmallow addiction and made a few tent pegs, just because.

After lunch we strolled the river on snowshoes for a bit longer then headed in, all around it was a great day, we saw a lot of tracks (camera died so no pics, but there where rabbit, coyote deer, moose mouse and even saw a few fisher tracks.) the weather was just right and our stomachs where full. practically perfect, except for the lack of spare batteries hahaha. i will do a proper review on the ML woods and bush with pictures soon.

Today the lesson learned was to always pack spare batteries!!!

Thanks for looking.

Gilles.

-15 and you're wearing what, two sweaters? I hope that's celsius.
Nice knife, pretty wife, I like those snowshoes, kind of looks like traditional style with modern materials. Looks like my kind of day. Sounds like an awesome sandwich BTW.

Great pics! Looks like a fun time. Thanks for sharing. I always like to see photos of snowshoeing outings.

My GV snowshoes have two rows of crampons for cross-country traction. I have not used a more traditional pair - how are yours for uphill / downhill / cross-country traction?

All the best,

- Mike

Looks like a great time.
How did you cook the salmon? In a pot? On a grill? on a stick?

That's a hell of an outfit and amazingly you found a knife that compliments it! looks like a good user.

All I can say is between the scenery, a wife who will not only snowshoe but tolerate/encourage knife use and a great lunch that must of been a good day.

Nice knife, nice wife - very geeky sweater :D :D Now if that brown sweater had reindeer on it instead of a crow's cloaca, well I just might have liked it too :D :D

So how deep was the snow? I'm itch'n to put on some snowshoes!

Nice stuff man, that is a sweet looking blade, lovein' alberta woods, there are some great areas for sure.

Nice blade, and some sweet looking snowshoes. I wish we got that much snow here, I always wanted to try snowshoeing.

Sounds like you had a great time. How freshly was the Salmon caught?

The snowshoes have the same design, with the two crampons on the bottom, this set belongs to my father, i think i will be buying some sturdier ones. they worked great for cross country, but going uphill was a bit of a chore and downhill was terrifying hahaha, but we made it through okay.

How far did you hike? What gear did you pack in?

It was a short hike, due to problems securing a babysitter for the little one. We also left late in the day. i would say we went about a half mile out, stopped and made camp then about a mile and a half back to the car. The gear we took in was minimal, because of the food etc. no pots no pans. a small (Work in progress) PSK, my new axe (i forgot to mention in the post. its a fiskar camp axe, also worked great.) knives (of course) and some extra clothing.

Looks like a great time.

We cooked the salmon using a varient to a method i saw ray mears do in sweden. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi_pgVlUC8Y

Her addiction is purses, something i will never understand. so i buy her at least one purse between knife purchases and she can't complain hahaha

very geeky sweater Now if that brown sweater had reindeer on it instead of a crow's cloaca, well I just might have liked it too

The Reindeer gets put away after Christmas, so every year i have something to look forwards to wearing hahaha. The snow was not too deep, we where walking on a river that gets packed down with snowmobiles fairly regularly, but when we trekked away from the river it got to as much as 3 feet in some places.
How freshly was the Salmon caught
Hahaha, i may have exaggerated a bit when i said fresh... store fresh. sorry about that.
