Short Hike On The Cumberland Trail

I took a short walk yesterday along the Cumberland trail. It was a nice break from the oppressive heat of the valley with the temp being 99F with a heat index of 111. I'm looking forward to Autumn, it's hard to get motivated to whip up a bite to eat over a fire on days like this...so no fire craft this time...no any kind of craft really, just walking around enjoying the peace taking pictures.

The section of the trail I was on passes through the Prentice Cooper Wildlife management Area.

One cool thing about the C.T. is that it is a section of the area where no ATVs are allowed.

There was no one else on this part of the trail then so it was nice and peaceful.

I recently got an old Schrade in a sort of trade. This is identical to one I carried on many trips to the woods back in my commercial fishing and trapping days. It was much like being reunited with a long lost friend.

There was surprisingly little fungi out yesterday, I figured there would be more with recent rains.

Not sure if this was done by lightning, insects, or both...there have been some pretty severe storms lately. Would have made great tinder and fuel had I needed it though.

There were flowers to enjoy along the way though.

Anybody know what these are? There were lots of them up there. The first two pics are top and bottom of the same plant.

Great pictures as always. TN is one of the states I would like to visit and camp in. Its on my list!

Makes me want to hit my local trail this weekend, rain or shine! Nice pictures!

That does look like a nice trip out in the woods. Just going for walk in the woods is
awesome. It is great to practice skills but sometimes it is just wonderfull to just walk in
the woods.

Glad to see you reunited with a old friend lol.

Thanks guys, glad you like the pics.

Tennessee has a lot of great hiking and camping areas!

Cool pics man, with ya on the heat, I understand why it's called Hotlanta! Got one of those old OT165's, great knife.

Awseome. That is one of my fav. shrades.

Amazing how much more practical those older knives are over the ones touted as "survival" knives today.
Western used to have one that mirrored your Schrade and was a true woodsman's tool.

I would love to hike that area in the fall, my family has lived in the La Follette area and has for over 100 years. Just wondering if my one grandfather, Peddler or the other grandfather the traveling minister walked these areas in their lives...

Mist,

Nice area and great pics. That is one beautiful area and I recall it being spectacular in the fall with the leaves changing colors.

Makes me wants some cooler days to get here.

Thanks man.

I think I helped build half the houses in Woodstock back in the 80's, I remember the summers there well.

Nice, I'm in East TN also. I think my dad and I have considered doing that trail several times.

The C.T. is nice. I really like the area over around Edwards Point a lot.

Thanks for sharing Mist ... nothing beats a nice day in the woods.

Yeah, the cool thing about my work taking me to the woods is that's where I take my breaks

Thanks bro, mine too.

I've had a few Western knives I liked in the past. I fell in love with the Woodsman because of it's stout blade, but it handles really well. I had the Deerslayer first and loved it's flat grind and wicked point, but the Woodsman won out on my edc fixed blade back then because of it's strength.

It's funny... my favorite modern "survival" knife is my Fallkniven A1, and it's one of the simplest knives I own.

Great stuff buddy, maybe ya need to get a Cumberland knife if ya gonna be going there a lot !:D

Thanks Pit, at one time that would have been right up my alley. As it is now I think I'm going to be packing my hawk and a smaller knife on most of my day hikes. I love this Schrade a lot, and it brings back a lot of memories... but I'm also very much looking forward to the Bushfinger I have coming from Andy. I may have to break down and get a small HV or GB axe just to feel in context :) . I'm sort of hung up on 4-6 inch blades lately...maybe I'm getting old and lazy........

You have NO idea how much I am looking forward to Autumn! I love hiking these woods in the cooler months much more.

Tennessee is a awesome place to visit. Not sure how I would fare with the 111 heat index, since I have to work on an all black surface with not shade at all, I think I rather not have it that hot out and working :D

Good pics

Thanks man.

I did a fare bit of roofing work here in my younger days...I wouldn't do that in the summer here now unless my kids life depended on it and there was no other option.

One thing I enjoyed about this post, was the pictures. I need to take more 'nature' pics when I am hiking.

good stuff. the old schrades were awesome. now they are made in china. atleast the one i got for 15 bucks was..
