Cmdr249 and I met up today at an Ohio State Park (Jane Thurston Park - Turkey Wood section). The park was situated about midway between our respective homes and within 2 hr drive each way. This was the first time I met Cmdr in person and it was a pleasure to make his acquaintance. He even had the patience to talk me into the park entrance and then drive partway to a familiar spot as I was having trouble finding it in the early part of the morning.

The park grounds border on the Maumee River, considerably upstream from its outlet into Lake Erie. There were lots of briars and scrub brush and we bushwacked through some of it following game trails and such. Even though you could hear the traffic in from the highway, the park was a real pleasant get away.

A shot of the stream (not the Maumee) coming off the main path and associated foot bridge.

Some ice patterns in the stream.

This is Cmdr's daypack - not too shabby. Actually I never had the chance to take a look at any maxpedition gear and I wasn't disappointed. This stuff is made really well with ingenious storage and organization options. The gunslinger - single sling carry is also much more comfortable than I imagined it would be.

Our first obstacle was traversing this flooded out portion of the trail. We went in a couple of different directions before finally finding a relatively dry spot to traverse.

Cmdr pointed out an Osage Orange fruit on the ground. First time I saw one of these things. Good eyes man!

A shot of the Maumee itself. The sun was kind of harsh so not too many shots of the river actually came out.

Okay what is this - the Iron Maiden tree?

DSC_0044-7.jpg

Doc - if you read this - is this poison oak? - the smaller vine in the pick below with the little roots at the sides

Apparently, one of the uses of the 'talon hole' on busses is to pick thorns

One of the big bad busses in action. After chopping through branches with ease, Cmdr decided to cross grain baton it through a knotted section. It did chew up a few batons in the process. This busse came factory with a sweet convex sharpening. I even had the pleasure of chopping through a few of the branches with it. One thing about those Busse's - they aren't hype. They live up to their reputation!

He also brought along the becker companion for the walk. It did its share of chopping and cutting. Nice knife!

I brought the JK kephart, Breeden pathfinder and my usual EDC JK kit knife

It was probably a bit comical. If Magneto (that magnetic comic villain were around) we'd be done for with all the steel on our bodies!

Although fires were not allowed in the park, we did practice our firesteel technique using different tinders and lighting them in a tin then I had. We didn't have a whole lot of luck with the natural tinders. They seemed pretty wet with the melt. We had good success powdered up coglan firestick, PJC, fatwood scrapings and alcohol-based hand disinfectant. I had jute twine in the pack but I forgot to try that out...Also another first for me, Cmdr had a Doan Magnesium bar. They are pretty nice!

We came across at least one hunter's deer stand set up in a tree. Not far along his shooting allow were signs of the prey.

More knife shots!

Actually at the vehicles we had a tonne of steel!

Love the BK9 - just amazing F&F

DSC_0079.jpg

Now what could be more fun then sitting at the picnic table and admiring a bit of steel????

I have to say - Cmdr's knives make mine all seem tiny. I managed to handle them all. His tan Batac is perhaps my favorite of the bunch, but I liked all of his Busse's. After we packed up, we ate at Jed's Barbecue Rodehouse in Monroe. Pretty good meal and it was great to just chat about our day, our knives, careers and families. All in all a great way to spend a Saturday!

Awesome pics Ken. I wish I could have joined you but the Mrs. and I have bothe been a bit under the weather as of late. My wife never even got out of her PJ's today.

Really great pictures--digital cameras are great.

Question: did you have enough knives?

Great pics KGD. It is great to hear about everyone getting together here on the forums for some quality wwods time.

We learn alot from each other reading posts, but we learn so much more in person IMO!

It looks like Cmdr249 had a lil Captain in him:D

Jimi Wades Scandi necker is awesome. I want one. Great blade selection. Lots of steel to choose from!!

Great hike you two. I wish I couldve been there too. That thorn tree is wild!!

From the books The Destroyer-Remo Williams, correct?

Awesome pics, especially the ice ones. And of course the knife porn!

Awesome! The Osage Fruit, that looks to me what I've only known them as hedgeapples. If it's the same "critter", rumor is that you put some in your basement and they'll keep spiders away. /shrug

Cool hike, and you guys were packing some serious steel.

If you ever want to have some fun cleaning off a knife, cut up an osage fruit.

Get well soon Chris, too bad you couldn't have made it. You would have had fun! There is always a next time, and I think that will definitely be happening!

Thanks on the comps guys - had a really good time. Rotte - we could've used a few more knives :D:D:D

I had an absolutely great time meeting kgd! This hike was exactly what I needed and I had great company.

The park was a random pic from things that looked about half-way for us and it was a great area to stomp around in!

One of my favorite parts was the fording of the river and our attempts across.

We found a lot of things in the area.

I've always known the Osage fruit as a hedgeapple too. I've heard the spider story as well. I can't remember but there is something that can be done with the resin/liquid inside as well.

The ferro striking session and tinder tests were a lot of fun - we got to test out several things and it was neat to see the alcohol sanitizer gel. It worked best on some type of tinder material and it actually burned colorless flame.

Our knife testing was mostly a courtesy because there was a downed tree across the path - we only did it to be nice to the trail. :D Seriously though, it was a lot of fun. It was the first test I did of the Busse CE SARsquatch with the convex edge and it bit deep. It did eat up several batons on the cross grain.

I got to handle several blades of kgd's from Breeden and JK and I really liked them as much in person as I have from pictures and reviews.

It was very nice to sit at the end and talk steel and handle blades at the picnic table.

It was a great way to start the new year and very good to be out. Temps were around 32 F with the bright sunlight and it was beautiful.

I love the Captain Morgan pic and it seems I got caught in the pics stepping - I didn't even know you were snapping them. :D

With what we bushwhacked through I couldn't imagine what it would be like when everything is growing. We found a couple of spots that would be great for fishing.

kgd is a great guy and I'm glad I got the opportunity to meet and talk with him.

Thanks brother!

Definitely.

Hope you feel better soon Chris and you're definitely welcome.

Yes, thanks for all the compliments guys.

Always room for more steel.

I thought of a couple small knives I could have brought on the way home - the Ratmandu and the Hairy Carry in 154cm.

I have to say that is absolutely true.

Getting together was great and kgd really helped me with my ferro rod work and tinder prep. Experimenting is fun but interaction with feedback and results is even better!

Hey, if one or both of you are ever up north give me a shout, Ill show ya some -40*C survival skills:D

If you guys each picked one knife out of that pile what would it be?

Looks like you guys had a great day out. I also got some more of your pictures for my website

Great pics  Thanks for sharing

The Iron Maiden Tree is probally some type of Locust(sp). They have some wicked thorns.

Hedge, Osage Orange, Bois D'arc. All about the same stuff.
