Cmdr249 and I met up today at an Ohio State Park (Jane Thurston Park - Turkey Wood section). The park was situated about midway between our respective homes and within 2 hr drive each way. This was the first time I met Cmdr in person and it was a pleasure to make his acquaintance. He even had the patience to talk me into the park entrance and then drive partway to a familiar spot as I was having trouble finding it in the early part of the morning.
The park grounds border on the Maumee River, considerably upstream from its outlet into Lake Erie. There were lots of briars and scrub brush and we bushwacked through some of it following game trails and such. Even though you could hear the traffic in from the highway, the park was a real pleasant get away.
A shot of the stream (not the Maumee) coming off the main path and associated foot bridge.
Some ice patterns in the stream.
This is Cmdr's daypack - not too shabby. Actually I never had the chance to take a look at any maxpedition gear and I wasn't disappointed. This stuff is made really well with ingenious storage and organization options. The gunslinger - single sling carry is also much more comfortable than I imagined it would be.
Our first obstacle was traversing this flooded out portion of the trail. We went in a couple of different directions before finally finding a relatively dry spot to traverse.
Cmdr pointed out an Osage Orange fruit on the ground. First time I saw one of these things. Good eyes man!
A shot of the Maumee itself. The sun was kind of harsh so not too many shots of the river actually came out.
The landscape we were walking through
