short hike with my bro

Went on a hike with my twin brother yesterday, it was a beautiful fall day and my blades were feeling neglected. I took a lot of knives but only got to use my cold steel bushman and my GB mini, had to leave a bit earlier then I would have liked.
It was just a 15 minute walk down the road from my house, saw some great colors and lots of deer sign, and some black bear tracks. Not really familiar with tracks really so if anyone knows how recent it is and how large it is I'd appreciate it.

The Mini was a laser beam, and the bushman was no slouch either, I intended to make a spear with it, but my bro was a bit freaked out by the bear track so I chopped him a nice pole and set it in firmly, he was then courageous enough to hike out of there instead of climbing a tree for the night.:p
There was an old beaver dam there and I tried to see if I could nab a small trout, (easing it right over them and chopping down) but those guys were way too fast, if I had more time I would have made a fish spear.
The bushman hit some rocks fairly hard after my misses, but no edge damage apparent.
I really like the spot and intend to go back with my much more wilderness savvy little brother, I promise to get more knife shots and hopefully see some more tracks.

Last two. Is there any way to attach them normally, not as thumbnails?

Cool pics bro, looks like a pretty big bear, but than again I never handled that ax, so what the hell do I know. You should of put the Cold steel up to it.

I was just thinking that, of all the blades I had it was probably the worst reference material, it's way smaller then it looks in pictures, but cuts way bigger.
I was pretty excited and had the axe right there, and my brother was freaking out a little bit.:D

great pics, sounds like a great day too, unlike mine... I was stuck at home waiting for the boss to pay me >:(

one thing about using the bushman as a spear....it works better as a "thrusting" spear than a throwing spear. I broke several Bushman blades a couple years back when using as tossing spears.....

however if an animal or human was attacking you, a good thrust with the bushman set in a pole and it will do major damage.

Yeah if thats a not a mini, it could be a polar bear track, or sasquatch.

That's funny, because both of us believe in sasquatch, but my brother is scared to go in the woods because of it.
I probably shouldn't be telling you this stuff about my twin brother, but it's pretty funny.

Bushman5,
The bushman was a great spear, one mod I did to it that I regret is cutting about 3/4'' off the end of the handle, which makes it tougher to fit on a stick. It almost came off after a thrust into a tree.
I did notice it was able to chop effectivley with the longer handle, and could be used to limb pretty far up a tree.
It's been a favourite of mine since I got it about 4 years ago, do you have the bowie version? I hear it's lesser quality, but mine is still unused.

Bumping this to aee if anyone knows how fresh that track is, and if shes a big one.
My guess is pretty fresh, we had rain the day before as well.

looks like a great area, I love the fall scenery too. Don't get much of that here :grumpy:

I'm back at my own comp now so will tell you how to size the Bear from the track.

Measure across the widest point of the front paws track and then add an inch, this will give you the approx length of the bear in feet.
In your pic the track looks to be around 6" so add an inch and that gives a bears length of 7 feet. A 7 foot bear in good condition would be around 450 lbs !

Thanks Pitdog! Interesting bit of info. Could you reccomend a good book on animal tracks? A smallish pocket size would be good, that I can take along easily on a hike.

Liam, next time Im back in nova scotia we have to meet up. I've got some beautiful property back there, out side of the annopolis valley. Georgous lake (paradise lake) got Islands and all kinds of fun stuff, and as far as I know it has a good supply of small mouth in it.

Yikes! That was a big bear. I'm glad you colud spend some outdoor time with your bro! :)

Fonly, sounds good man, I should be around here or Halifax for a while, we can go cut some stuff, I want to try out your wetterlings.
Thanks for the links pitdog, think I'm due for a big amazon order.:D

Man, thats neato. I've never seen a bear in the wild. I'd love that. I know predators are dangerous, but there is a majesty about them too IMO.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping to see it, there was no cub prints around and there has been a lot of apples and berries this fall, so he was probably pretty full.
Seeing one in the wild must be pretty thrilling, I am going to go look around soon, but it's probably hit the fart sack for the winter by now.
