Short KA-BAR USMC

if you get any knife and send it to siguy it will be a a fantastic blade when you get it back...my 6 dollar tramotina has been convex by siguy and out performs everylarge 100 dollar knife I've owned. He covexed a buck stockman for me in the past and it is the sharpest folder I've ever had... sen him a usmc or a heavy bowie or a butter knife with an 8 inch blade and you'll get a bad ass cutting blade when you get it back.

Where d'ya get the 8" butter knives from Riley ?:D

I wouldnt go with a short
I bought one thinking it would be perfect size, but my hand barely fits on the handle!!

I have medium large hands and the short Kabar worked well for me for many years. Mostly I cut rope and branches with it on the farm. Gifted it to a friend a few years ago. Would like to get another some day and mod it.

I currently have three full sized ones A Black Kabar with Kraton handle, wood handled Camillus and an Ontario with no handle. I convexed the edge on the Camillus, sharpened the clip, removed the rear guard and ground in a choil. Cuts really well. Convexing the edge and removing the rear guard is what I'd do when I get another shorty Kabar. :)

D-Filgate ,could i suggest you ask for a becker necker? They are a great little knife now back in production ,affordable and it seems you have the big ones well covered.

I have a old school Ontario USMC I got from Vic and it is one of my favorite knives.
However it has a radical edge that Vic did which makes a HUGE difference. I really like the leather handle and sheath ,they make it seem so warm and comfortable. The 1095 is easy to sharpen. Here is a pic of the USMC with a modern version the SwampRat DesertJack. You can see how much the edge was changed by the shiny parts of the blade.

I sold the DJ but kept the USMC.

I've got a full size heavy bowie and the full size USMC knife. I don't ever use the USMC, just doesn't excel at much of anything. Definitely not chopping or anything 'heavy'. The bowie, on the other hand, is right on target. Great for big stuff/heavy use, chopping, but frankly can still make a mean fuzz stick. :D

I have owned and carried ka-bars for a few years and Haven't had any problems making it do anything I wanted it to do within reason. Both the full sized "Classic" Ka-bar and the newer D2 Extreme.I have moved on to different blades as my tastes changed but I wouldn't hesitate to use them if need arises again.

I think your basic kabar will make a decent survival knife It wouldn't be my first choice for a carving knife or a hunting knife or a chopper but if your skills are good it will do all of those things I say if you like it get it and grow your skills to match if you feel that they are not already there.. if you feel they are than no worries..a knife is just sharpened steel the man is what makes it work within the tools, and his own limitations, only experience will show what the limits of both of those are... Allright time to turn the lava lamp off, and put out the incense LOL.. My Dad was a Marine in WW2 (God rest his soul) he talked about his kabar for decades after..untill his death actuall in 2001 if it was good enough for him it's good enough for me.. THat being said I'd remove the rear guard and convex it..
