As one guy said on a video about a survival knife he designed, "Always cut away from yourself, toward your mate." That hook is to prevent the thing flying out of your sweaty hand and hitting your mate.

Nice multi-purpose tool sheath. I have an old hand-forged Thai blade that is similar to that. Thinner edge but short and thick-backed, about 9" long. I had to put on a handle - got the blade at a junkyard or maybe for free.

the strap of metal off the end of the handle? Machete was made from bilhook. You can cut with curved tip of bilhook by pulling it towards yourself. Metal hook on end of the handle is for better grip. And, yes, it "prevent the thing flying" when chopping :)
