Short Stubby Knives - Did I Miss the Memo?

Which one would you prefer to use if your life depended on it?

When I am having surgery, my life usually depends on the knife the surgeon is using!

What does that mean:"When my life depends on it"? How is my life supposed to depend on my knife? If I am threatened, I would prefer a big long stick or a hand gun and no knife at all. If my life depends on an operation someone is performing on me, I would like it to be one that is suited to the task.

However, if you are referring to a survival situation: Most survival situations I am fortunate enough to be able to enter them on my own terms (meaning, when I go hiking, I can select my gear). Since I am usually flying transcontinental a knife would not be of much use to me in the event of a plane crash...I would simply drown. If we have a Y2K like crash of all infra structure, it will still take a while to take effect. Plenty of time to choose my gear from the stuff I have at home. Since I can select my own gear I would always TWO knives, one big, one small (around 3" and 7+"). And if we are saying, simply for the sake of the argument, that I am allowed only one, I would take one of medium length (5-6"), that does each task equally poorly....

these are my last 3 fixed blade purchases, and a Vic tinker for comparison.

I guess it's all about perception. To me, a small knife has a 3"-4" blade. Anything under 3" is approaching "tiny" and of limited value. Why? Well usually such knives are too small for my hands. That's not to say such knives don't have their uses, but they aren't what I'd consider for anything other than the lightest of duties. There are a few knives out there under 3" that fit my hands, but I don't really see their advantage. Small blades are easier to control, but I don't find a 2" blade really any easier to manipulate than a 3" blade and 3" blades slice better.

To everyone who has responded, THANK YOU. I think I need to clarify my original intentions, however.

I am a big fan of 3-4" folders and carry one daily. I find this size to be useful and not attract too much attention from the sheeple that we all encounter.

My question was geared more towards the ilk of the Gerber Fatty and Boker SLB...I guess I just don't get it. A wide sub-2" blade seems to lack utility for most daily chores and would be useless as a defensive tool unless used as a slasher. I do admit to there being somewhat of a "cuteness factor" in play.

Thanks again for helping fit this in my brain!

I just attended a folding knife seminar in Edmonton this weekend. As my girlfriend is very pregnant right now- I brought my friend Genevieve. Both of the Smith and Wesson "knives" (turned into trainers) that we had with us- one cuttin horse and one recurve camo- were too big for her tiny hands. When we got to my house after the fun- I showed her a selection of knives that I had that might fit her hand better. Her choice was a Cold steel El Lobo- a knife that many men have told me was just too small to be useful!
Just goes to show you that you have to look outside of your own viewpionts to see the bigger picture (the term ethnocentrism springs to mind)
My brain cell's worth!
