I would like to build a machete type sword.I was thinking about going with 1060 carbon steel,1/4 in thick, about 3in wide and a total length of 28in.I want to use it for clearing thicker types of brush so wanted it to be heavier than you typical machete.I new to sword making and I was hoping someone could give me some advice on my choice of using the 1060 carbon for my blade.will it be strong enough to hold a good edge against that type of abuse.Thank you for your time.

1060 should be fine, but 5160 might be a better choice. The chromium in it lets it harden more than 1060, while still being plenty tough. It's also easier to find. I get mine from Aldo Bruno.

I agree that 5160 would also be a good choice and likely easier to find. I think you will find that a blade that length will probably be too wide at 3 inches but whatever suits your needs.
