Shorten knife blade?

I imagine it would look kinda like this.

I am not a proponent of breaking laws but don’t think you would have a problem with the knife laws precisely because you are not breaking any other laws.

I don’t know you but the fact that you are asking tells me enough to assume you are not going to be on law enforcements radar.

I asked a local cop once (random in public) about legal size folders. He seemed amused that some law abiding looking person would randomly ask him this and smiled. He said he had a wide latitude of disctection and it would only be a potential issue if I was already breaking other laws.

Most people asking such questions are obviously trying to comply with the law, and by definition are not the ones posing a problem. Having said this, I do not live on NY city or I probably would be a bit more concerned with following the letter of the law.

Here is what me and the LEOs are working with in NC.......

  • S. 14-269, which prohibits the concealed carrying of any “bowie knife, dirk, dagger,” or “other deadly weapon of like kind.” The statute doesn’t apply to an “ordinary pocket knife carried in a closed position.” In Matter of Dale B., 96 N.C. App. 375 (1989), the court ruled that a knife that was “about four and one-half inches in overall length, when folded,” was an ordinary pocket knife. However, the exception doesn’t cover switchblades, i.e., knives that that may be “opened by a throwing, explosive, or spring action.” So it is illegal to carry a switchblade or a fixed-blade knife in your pocket in North Carolina. Open carry appears to be OK.

So what is legal folder blade length in NC? I have no idea.

The good news is it seems clear that I can not possess any knives with explosive opening mechanisms. Not sure what that even means :)

I actually have a reground 450 that is 3", I'm too lazy to upload pics though. It has the tip dropped a bit, so it also looks less stabby/threatening.

OP, the state law is relevant here. Chicago for example prohibits the carry of a blade over 2.5". Many states, however, have length limits that are specifically for adding charges if you get in an altercation; in other words, stay out of trouble and you'll be good. Of course there's always the risk you get a bad cop, it's a toss up really. From experience, I carry as high as 3.5" in a 3" state and haven't had any issues for 2 years.

Thanks so far everyone for the good info. As far as the law goes I’m pretty comfortable with the rules in the county, state, multiple little cities, and municipalities around me. I’ve watched a few videos regarding all the different areas around me and asked a lawyer friend who has actually worked a few cases where knife size came into question how the law is typically interpreted. As for why I don’t just get a different knife the answer is fairly simple, I truly enjoy how the 0450 looks and feels. Not saying it’s the best or whatever but I’m the type of person that after having something for a while it just kinda becomes like a little part of me for lack of a better way to explain it. It’s not a big issue and I’ll carry it anyway unless I think I’ll be getting into some trouble lol. I was just genuinely interested if it could be done and how it would turn out if done.

Prohibited to import into Canada I should have stated. A flipper is considered an automatic by the CBSA and has been for a while....

(a) Automatic knife – An automatic knife is one that houses a blade that will open automatically by applying hand pressure to a button, spring, lever, or other device, in or attached to the handle of the knife, including knives that have a button, spring, lever, or other device, located in the spine of the handle and attached to the inner part of the blade.
Note: Knives that have a ‘thumb stud’ attached to the blade of the knife, that is independent of the handle (not protruding from the handle in the closed or folded position), and that open automatically by applying pressure to the thumb stud, do not generally meet the above definition of a prohibited weapon, and as such do not generally fall under TI 9898.00.00. However, if such a knife is found to also open by gravity or by the application of centrifugal force alone, it may still be considered to be prohibited. The misuse of knives may nonetheless be punishable under other laws.
This is the type of law that really pisses me off. Basically it says you can’t really carry anything depending on how the specific judge interprets the law. Really citizen limiting type law

This is really good advice. Thank you

That isn't a law. It is just a memorandum/policy on the importation of knives by the CBSA(Canadian Border Security Agency) that has no authority to change laws. It is completely legal to carry/edc a flipper knife in Canada.

Lol OK fine. Here it is next to my reground Dragonfly 2. You should know that I did not mod this myself but I bought it this way, the previous seller also did not mod it. I believe that not only was the tip dropped but the whole profile mightve been slightly shrunk, it's hard to tell because I don't have a second 450. It was also anodized and has a weird scratchy finish.

Oh wow, it looks pretty darn good. Thanks for posting I appreciate it. Do you notice it fitting loose or feeling off in any way? I know you don’t have a normal one to compare too just curious of any negatives you may have noticed

I have owned a normal one before and it feels the same. Solid lockup, typical slick ZT flipping action. It's a very nice carry.

Clamp it in a vise, with 1/4 inch of the tip showing. Take a big hammer and break the tip off. Then put it in a box and mail it to the ZT warranty department. Put a nice note in the box saying that you would like your knife sharpened, and also you had managed to break the tip off it. Would it be possible to reshape the tip while they were at it.:)

Yes I'm joking, sort of. I managed to break the tip off of this knife. I took it to the Kershaw warranty department.
( Kershaw and ZT warranty are the same place.) I told the nice Lady behind the counter, I would like to get my knife sharpened. And would it be possible to fix the tip. She said sure no problem. About five minutes later she brought it back looking like this.
