Shot Show thoughts?

Anything looking good from Shot Show? I can't say there is much that shouts take my money but wondering what people are seeing.

Pretty meh, too many "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" knives out there, mixed with everyone wanting a budget brand with a budget sub-brand and a sub-brand of that sub-brand.

Only things that kind of stuck out to me are the Lionsteel/Emerson Karambit which happens to come in Magnacut, Hogue Deka coming in Magnacut (although it's polymer handle, so that's a no for me), and Protech coming out with a lot of magnacut models (don't like protech).

Morale of the story, magnacut stole the show, which is a bit sad that a new knife steel was all I could come up with.

This sounded intriguing enough for me to look for it and found this on LionSteel's website.

You're looking at a karambit w/an aluminum integral frame, LS's REF removable flipper tab, an Emerson wave (which makes the flipper tab irrelevant, especially w/the oblong "hole" already built into the blade) and MagnaCut steel on top of that. Talk about "cutting edge!"

They are quoting it at 214 or $242 for the plain stonewashed blade or 228 or $258 for a "chemical black' blade and are estimating availability in about 40 days beginning around March 2022. See: L.E. One by lionSTEEL.

Definitely something I'd be interested in adding to my karambit folder collection which can sit right beside my 2 Fox/Emerson folding karambits, which have gotten a lot of chatter on BF recently. LOL! ;)

I'd even consider buying one w/a black frame with both a plain SW and black chemical blade to match my pair of plain/black Spyderco Karahawks.

PS: I don't own a Hogue Deka but I do own a 7" black cerakoted EX-F01and if they're going to make one of these in MagnaCut, I'd consider buying another.

The TOPS/Szabo collab got my attention, so did the rescue tool that White River had on display. It's supposed to be for EMS to punch windshields, cut sheetmetal, and so on. A rescue or vehicle extrication tool, rather than a dedicated cutting implement.

It's pretty expensive for me: I could get an Impi or an Emerson for about the same price, which would work a lot better for my modest cutting chores. But I like overkill demolition tools.

I have seen nothing about Zero Tolerance knives for this year, I'm not certain they even have a presence at Shot.

Benchmade is more of the same, really nothing new.

Spyderco, I'm not sure I like their no-lock models.

Maybe I'm just bored with knives, but there isn't anything "wow" this year.

Yea, that thought has crossed my mind lately. Then again, if you look at all the changes to the knife collecting and enthusiast market over the past five years or so, maybe SHOT is just becoming less relevant to knife enthusiasts and collectors like us. Sure it's still important to the big American manufacturers and retailers, but it seems many companies are moving away from just a single yearly release. Many of the non- U.S. based companies constantly release new products on a schedule that's not tied to any major trade shows, and even U.S. based companies like Spyderco and Emerson have moved towards more constant releases and new model announcements when the models are ready to ship. Added to that is the rise in popularity of direct sales and designers cutting out the middle man and directly marketing their OEM made blades, and big industry shows like SHOT have become a yawnfest to enthusiasts like us.

I like the looks of the Benchmade Anonimus. The taggedout looks interesting but I'd rather not have bright orange scales!

Not wanting to derail this thread, but since the OP's title is "SHOT Show Thoughts," maybe I can interpret the question in a larger sense, than just what specific knives were intersting this week.

So, maybe the issue is not the lack of new, interesting knives, but with the SHOT show itself?

IMO trade shows like SHOT are obsolete. SHOT started when, in the 1990s? This was before the internet emerged as the leading communication platform for companies to reach consumers. Today, this is how most companies communicate with their consumers AND with their dealers. Of course, SHOT excludes consumers, and is only open to the trade, and this is a part of the problem as well.

So dealers go to SHOT with their video cameras, and generally amateur-tier interviewing skills. Then they post up these vids on their websites. Most of the SHOT 2022 videos published on here recently by some big knife dealers (in a different thread, iirc) are lame. The ones I have seen are just sycophantic - like "We'll do a video dude, say you're doing great things, and by the way can you send us a bigger allocation?"

I would like to name names, but it would be bad form, and probably against BF rules.

My hope is that blade manufacturers reach out directly to consumers to see what they - us consumers - want. Then, they would respond to consumer feedback, initiate their production, and THEN make their items available to dealers. No SHOT Show required.

Regional shows such as Blade Show and Blade Show West I think are a different animals. SHOT on the other hand is the monopolistic elephant that maybe should be put down.

FWIW, this sentiment is also active a on a major firearms forum where I occasionally hang out, which I probably should not name publicly until I check the BF rules.

I like gear but I was thinking of knives. I think overall Spdyerco's new way of revealing new products works better than the SHOT format but then they look like they are not rolling out much at SHOT. I will be interested in the Ayub model in cru-wear. A lot of manufacturers are putting in new steel but not really changing the models. Than again if you look at the car industry how much real innovation is there each year? Maybe too long with covid quarantine thinking about different knives and stuff.

That new SIG K320- AXG folder with the aluminum scales, wood inly and opening hole is pretty cool. I've never owned a Hogue knife but I'm really liking what they're doing with their affordable knives with good geometry and what looks to be all around good construction. Much better prices than say Benchmade. That said I do like the BM Taggedout. I hate that it has the grivory scales, I just can't buy a knife with a plasticy handle. I get it, especially with Spyderco's lightweight models, that they're so that people can get the higher end blade steels for a less expensive price but I'd have to change the scales and by that time the price is getting up there. Hopefully Benchmade will see how much people are enjoying the new imported knives with good scale materials and good blade steels for much lower prices and decide to through some g10 or micarta on the grivory models for just a tiny bit more. Hogue's new auto looks pretty sweet too although I'm not much of an auto guy.

Started in '79. Used to go in the '80s. The Vegas event were alright but I liked it best in NewOrleans. It was a pretty big deal for my families Sporting Goods store. Killer deals were often given at the Show. Most of the stores yearly inventory was planned and purchased at this Show. I don't know about current times but I would be surprised if this has changed but you are right that the internet has caused major upheaval with retail.

Just looked at them and dang do I wish they had a stonewashed blade option. I despise coated blades, but Hogue does great work. Love the Deka and I’ve been eyeballing the k320 for a while, but didn’t want the polymer scales. Aluminum is a great upgrade, but again the blade coating is a no go for me. It’s interesting because this knife is remarkably similar to the insanely popular TRM Shadow, but gets very little attention.

The only similar things between TRM Shadow and Hogue Deka is axis-style lock and 20CV steel. Very different blade shapes and handle design. Deka is more comparable to the Bugout than Shadow. I own all 3 knives. They're all different and good in their own ways.

I want Hogue to make the Deka with the carbon fiber handles like their 2021 Blade Show exclusive. Magnacut Deka sounds cool... until they said it comes with a polymer handle.

Definitely talking about the k320 being similar to the shadow, not the Deka.

I hear you man, I realllly don't like coated blades either. I've only bought a couple in my entire knife collecting time and just couldn't get down with them. It'd definitely have to be an uncoated blade for me to buy it.

I might very well have bought that Magnucut Deka too if it came with g10 or aluminum or micarta, or anything other than polymer.
