Shotgun questions

One thing to mention. Teh Mossberg receiver is aluminum. The 870 is steel. You can mount a scope to both (drill and tap) bu the remington receiver will hold up better.

I have had a Mossberg for close to 20 years, thousands of rounds through it. No problems at all. Just a good cleaning now and again. I haven't purchased another shotgun because whatever I would purchase wouldn't do anything better than the 500. With that said, if I needed to replace it, it would be with an 870.

You should be able to find 500's for way less than $200. You can buy them new for not much more.

Buy a Remington. There are more aftermarket parts, and its easy to add a mag extension as well.

Wow you think I would have seen this post earlier.:D My take,
The Mossberg is a good gun but I never considered them because I don't like the safety.
The Ithaca is rumored to be a great shotgun but I've never seen one sold around here and I think there may be a reason for that. :o
The Winchester is a real good shotgun and honestly has the most logical placement for the safety. But the action is, yeah I'll say it, too smooth. You just dont have a feel for where the bolt is. This isn't a problem for aggressive shooters who jam the action back and forth though.
The Remington is what I like. It has a nicer fit and finish than most and an all steel receiver. The safety isn't in the best position but adequate and I can feel what the action is doing when pumping because it has the classical kachunk-kachunk. Used you're looking at $250 in my area for 'like new' and less depending on how scratched they are.

All above make great PUMP shotguns and you really can't buy a bad one. For semi-auto you're looking at foreign, preferance going to Benelli than Beretta.
