Shotgun

The proverbial "bump in the night" that wakes me up is dealt with in the following manner. First a lamp or overhead light goes on in every room of the house at the same time except my bedroom (the hall outside my bedroom is lit) and a tape player with a loop tape starts playing the announcement "THE POLICE HAVE BEEN CALLED". I keep at least one lamp with 100 watt bulbs in each room. Second I wait a few minutes to let a possible intruder exit. Normally 10 lights going on simultaneously along with the tape will make even a stupid thief leave. Next I turn off the tape player and listen, if all is quiet I arm myself with a handgun.

For the lighting I use the Radio Shack Plug N Power units. Radio has dropped these but the are still available from the manufacturer at 10x.com. 50 bucks will buy a control pad and 8 remote switches, a single button will turn everything on at once. Trust me this will scare the pee out of a BG, blind him with light, and confuse him badly.

One other thing, no members of my family have a key to my house. If my brother pisses off his wife and wants to sleep on my couch he has to ring the doorbell or better yet call me first.

That is brilliant.

Absintheur, thank you for that post. It looks to me that you have a plan that is well thought out and will work great for you. Unfortunately due to legal restrictions I cannot own a handgun at this time. Also the way my apartment is set up i feel a long gun would work just as well.

Just so there is no confusion, I'm not advocating an inexperienced person deploy CQB tactics to clear their own home. Having personally been run through a "shoot house", I have no illusion about my skills and I'm more experienced then most gun owners in the non-sporting use of firearms (I'm no expert, nor do I consider myself that skilled - only slightly more skilled then a total novice or hard core hunter). Solid tactics are required with a handgun, rifle, or shotgun if you are going to do anything beyond a solid defense.

For most people, a shotgun, rifle, or pistol are best used in a barricaded defensive position. An old TV and VCR are not worth the complications in MY life if I leave my defensive position to confront a criminal. Call the police and let them deal with any criminal and civil liability that could result from a non-life threatening confrontation. If someone is trying to take your life or that of a family member or cause irreparable harm, let your conscience guide you to the course of action that is right for YOU. Machismo may suggest "my house is my castle and I will defend it at all cost" but, the best overall course of action may be to hunker down and let law enforcement deal with the aftermath. The choice is yours.

In terms of deploying a handgun or a Short Barrel Shotgun in a room clearing scenario, training is the key to success. If you can master one, you can master the other. Keep in mind the tactics are very similar if not the same with a handgun or SBS. A 26+ inch barreled shotgun is a different story.

A little rant:
There are a lot of self appointed "experts" and "mall ninjas" that spew forth total nonsense about pump action shotguns for use in a self defense scenario. Only buy into what you have personally demonstrated or see demonstrated by a credible source (i.e. one of the professional firearms schools and their instructors, not YouTube). What someone else can do is only applicable if you can reliably demonstrate the same skill.

Sheetrock scrap isn't expensive at a construction site and may go a long way to demonstrating what that self defense shotgun is capable of inside your home. Old scrap blue jeans and leather products can be enlightening if you have never shot a goose, turkey, deer, or pheasant with a shotgun.
