Shotguns for Deer Hunting. Some Questions.

I dream of getting one the Ruger 1A's that were chambered in .303. I had one in 7x57 and stupidly sold it. I'd love to have a matched pair of single shots in .303 British and 30/40 Krag.

There used to be a guy out in the Las Vegas area that did a lot of custom work on Enfield's. He had conversions to 7.62x39 (took single stack AK mags), 45/70, and .45ACP, as well as custom .303 rifles. It was called Special Interest Arms, I think.

I had one of the CZ527 Carbine's in 7.62x39 and it was a sweet little gun. 18.5" barrel and around 6lbs or so. I had it glass bedded and it would shoot the cheap Wolf 122HP ammo into less than an inch at 100yds, 5 shots. Dumbass that I am, I traded for something that I don't even remember now. I came out way ahead $$ wise, but I should have kept that one, looking back on it.

The safety issue with shotguns as far as I understand it is one of distance. A slug or buck won't travel as far with a missed shot as say a .30-06. They have considerably less velocity. The effective distance would depend on your gun, your load, and your choke system. There's really too many variables with shotguns to give a definite "you can use it to this distance."

id use a h and r hammerback 12 gauge single shot.. rifled bore a scoped.using sabots. 100 yards is a breeze. i always figure i get one shot anyhows. you can swap barrels for gobbler season...tough reliable no nonsense shotgun.and extremely light weight. impo

H & R Slugger, 20 ga 3", fully rifled w/Nikon 3-9X SlugHunter. Shoots WW Supreme Partition Gold 260 gr like a rifle. Remington Buckhammer shoots almost as well. I'm just an old trigger puller but believe that population density and lethal range of hi-power C/F drove the shotgun only rationale..also have to remember in the U.S. deer herds only achieved sustainable hunting levels in last 50 years or so...lot of new and necessarily inexperienced hunters when first deer seasons set.

I remember deer hunting in the UP of MI 45-50 years ago and a barrage of high power bullets going through the trees overhead - no one was shooting at me but it is true you don't have to worry about the bullet with your name on it but the one addressed "To Whom It May Concern".

I don't know about how much you would actually hunt but a starter 12 ga pump w/peep-ramp sight fair trigger could get you on the paper plate[10-11"] target at 100 yards or less which would assure a lethal shot on a deer. Don't overlook the used market for a slug gun.

"To Whom It May Concern" :) I enjoyed that thanks.

I appreciate all the interesting information and advice from everybody.
