Should a Neck Knife be part of Survival Kit?

Of course they should, especially as a back-up to a big blade. There's a huge contingent of Mora fans around here; practically any Mora could be carried around the neck easily with the right sheath. Last-ditch kits like Guyon and pict showed are great examples of how efficient they can be. I'd rather count on a full-tang necker than a folder in a tough spot. Easy to clean, hard to break. I know there are some great folders out there, I'm just more comfortable with simple. Neckers are typically fairly easy to manufacture as well, so you're paying for good steel not extensive machining and stuff. That usually means good performance for price. I do prefer to carry a MUCH bigger blade as well, given the choice :D

The Becker is my EDC, the Kalista is my river knife, the neck knife IMO is the handiest carry possible. Chris

Thanks for the link, Dahsyat.

The breakaway factor mainly concerns me for canoeing/kayaking. The last thing you need in case of capsizing is for your neck lanyard to get hung underwater and twisted.

If I can get up enough of an order to justify the shipping, I'm going to pick up a few of those .99 breakaway attachers.

hikeeba, where'd you get those lanyards with the plastic breakaway clasps?

Honestly Guyon, I don't recall. Oh wait, I remember now. They came with the Pelican L1 1930 LED light. I've long since ditched the lights because they are accidentally turned on so easily.

99¢ for a break-away lanyard connector, $5.55 for shipping. Such a deal! :D

Anyone know what sorts of stores sell those things so I don't have to get reamed on shipping charges?

Minimum shipping cost is a good excuse to add a knife or flashlight to your cart :) :)

You can find the hardware locally at craft/hobby stores, scout stores and if they have them in your area Tandy Leather stores. I find some cheap lanyards at Wally World from time to time that I disassemble for parts as well.

My answer would be, if you think you need or want a neck knife as part of your survival kit, then by all means have one as part of your kit. Knife selection is a matter of personal taste, there are no right or wrong answers.

Thank you folks for all the comments....

I can see how not having a breakaway clasp can very quickly ruin the day...

I looked around and found that even my ID card holder from the last conference has a breakaway clasp. Well...., goodbye ID card holder.

I have made the adjustment as suggested. Here is the new set up with the safety device installed.

Thanks...

Dahsyat, the way you have this rigged nullifies the break-away ability of the barrel clasp! If you are being choked, the cordlock will simply slide up the cord to the break-away clasp and hold the cord together!

The break-away clasp MUST be in the loop that goes around your neck.

Crap..., I almost hang myself again... :o Good eye jag-engr...! Thanks...

As you can see I am new to this neck knife stuff...

I actually tested what kind of force it needed to breakaway, and it was way too much force. It brokeaway but I need to pull really hard...

Here's the modification as per your suggestion... thanks again...

If you need a carry thinghy, just nick the kids mobile phone sling. At least in Sweden we get those bands everywhere, with or without the breakaway thing. You get them thrown at you at computer shows, at the open air market you can buy thousands of those and they come with MP3-players and USB-sticks and such. Why not just make the sling out of some nice nylon band and stitch or glue welcro on it to make it fall apart.

  • My favorite is to run a chain through silicone aquarium air tubing. You can use the tubing for drawing water from cracks and seeps. It spreads the weight out on your kneck and doesn't absorb sweat and body oils like paracord will.

Your friend gave you a wonderful knife-- great photos too.

After using the paracord necker for just a short while in this high humidity environment, I can see you've made a very good point. I will have to try other options as well... Thanks

I carry a SAK in a neck sheath. It's easy to get at while in the car, and it doesn't print in my pocket. I teach JHS and the kids would be a pain if they realised I carried a knife daily.
