Should have done this years ago

I've sold the great majority of my expensive blades...and only kept a few of the finest.
My mad-money is at an all-time low, so have looked at less expensive knives. Civivi is a Chinese company
with excellent quality blades, being a cheaper leg of WE knives. Many folks here love them.
There are several Civivi folders in the $60 range that have caught my eye, although I haven't yet decided whether to support Chinese manufacturing. Their quality is excellent, so the question deals with politics. It's a decision I haven't made yet.
Good to see ya around. Hadn’t for a while. Hope all is well. Much of our supplies are affected by your same quandry.

The only knives that I really "need" are 1 of the 5 SAK Explorers that I own & just a few of the many knives sitting in my kitchen drawers.

However, as knife "collector" I enjoy the search to find more knives that I want to add to my collection.

The $ spent doesn't matter to me. It's a hobby & the search for additions to my collection keep me mentally stimulated & give me something to do beyond napping in front of the TV. 🥱

So, I don't find buying more knives a problem.

The problem for me is that it's so much harder for me to find knives that I want to buy now than it was before.🤷

Wow, this sure strikes a chord. Though the $ spent is a bit more of a concern for me, and the hunt has definitely slowed down since retiring earlier this year, it’s actually become more of a challenge (but a fun challenge) finding stuff that tickles me enough to want to spend on it. The thing is, I’m not really actively searching as much as cool stuff occasionally drifting by, mostly from hanging around this awful cathedral of enablement.

My buying has definitely slowed down. I’ve finally figured out exactly what I like and want and currently have just about everything I want. I’ve also instituted a rule that I must sell to buy. So for the last year I haven’t put any new money into the collection.

I have gotten into one particular custom maker and have made 3 purchases from him this year. I really enjoy input on the build and the 3-4 months it takes to make them gives me time to sell to fund the purchase and the knowing I have one being made prevents any other purchases.

Understandable, the reality is a few knives could last you a lifetime.

However I’ve always liked blades in general.
Now I have the ability to own whatever I want.
I don’t really feel guilty owning what I like, and being able to enjoy and use them.

I don’t know what it is about these things, whether it’s knives, watches, flashlights, binoculars, guitars, etc, etc, etc, but something grabs us, and just like those potato chips, ya can’t have just one. I’ve always liked knives since my first Cub Scout knife when I was a kid, and carried a SAK Spartan daily for over 40 years. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I grabbed my first ‘nice’ pocket knife, a Kershaw Blur S30V, which somehow grew into 85 folders, 13 SAKs, 4 multi tools, and somewhere around a dozen fixers (I don’t know, I lost count). I only feel guilty when I look at the whole list. For a minute.

The winklers are nice. Dont look at any Volunteer knives. You might have to order one

As far as the main topic of this post, I think we all go through this. Buy, buy, buy, try, try, try and then one day suddenly you realize you have that one that everything is getting measured against. Eventually you realize that IS “the one” and your purchases fall way off to things that you know wont kick “the one” out of your pocket full time. For me the things I buy now are either unique or niche for special occasions or very specific uses.
Rizt,
I know what you are relating to as far as the knife talking to you when it is first handled.. I have been known to do impulse knife buying from time to time. Usually have buyer's remorse after doing so.. There have been times when I go to a custom knife show and walk the aisles where one specific knife will call my name, but once I have handled it, it will be like a red headed step child returned back to the table because it doesn't "talk" to me when I picked it up.. Over the years, I have given away several manufactured and custom knives that fit into this category.. Most I can say went to my military students who were deploying and they fell in love with the knife where as for me it was like the aforementioned red headed step child.. Now when I get the urge to get a knife, I usually go the custom route and will talk in depth with the chosen bladesmith to get exactly what I want.. By doing this, the possibility of getting a white elephant in the order is limited.. But due to my location in the south pacific islands and at least 8 hrs flying time to any stateside bladesmith, most of my orders are done via email and indepth talks via this mode of communication... I live 4 hrs flying time from Japan and the Philippines and possibly 5 hrs to Taiwan, so my choices are limited due to the airfare and expense.. But once I get the specific knife that is tweaked to my specifications, they are put into use as part of my edc rotation and are either placed in my weapons locker in the Philippines or here on Guam.. Never have an edged weapon too far from my reach in case of having to cut an apple or reach the bottom of the peanut butter jar when making my Elvis impression by eating Peanutbutter and banana sandwiches
