Should I buy a Damascus Skyline?

As much as I like my skyline its meant to be used. Its plausible you can make 30 to 50 dollars for it once the run goes...but I personally don't like gouging people because of that reason. It's a $50 knife if you aren't going to use it I would press on. There's so many knives out there and tons of nice knives to try!

I bought 2 today. Just because Skylines are fun and damascus is fun. I have one in my arsenal from way back. I bought a second one several months ago, and flipped it for a profit (sorry haters). But yeah, get one. You'll either use it, hoard it or sell it. Whatever you do with it - its all good.

Here is why I stated what I stated:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Sandvik-14C28N-and-S30V?p=8732955#post8732955

Carbon steel (such as what Alabama Damascus is made from, has carbides) will cut longer than 14C28N (upgraded razor blade steel) which has few to no carbides.

I agree and I prefer carbon steel myself.

Perhaps I should have re-worded my previous statement...

What I meant was that some people have the idea that damascus is sought after because of some magical performance benefits and that that's why it commands a higher price. Yes it'll hold an edge longer than the alphabet steel, itll also require more care in regard to corrosion which some people may not want.

My point was simply that I would not buy a knife with random pattern damascus as I feel it defeats the purpose of damascus, which is almost solely its appearance.

Random patterns and beauty is totally subjective. I would take a random pattern over many if the Damascus patterns out there any day.

Not into Damascus but hey, I think the random pattern still looks good.

I had one from the very first run but since traded it. It commanded a good price back then. 50 bucks is so tempting but it's not gonna get used like last time so I think Ill pass.

Just buy it so you don't regret it latter. It's cheap now but these things were fetching 2-3x the price before this round of them came in.

This is good advice.

Also, with my soon to be three LE Skylines, I can make some pretty cool blade swap combos. :D

(Red and Damascus, anyone?)

If you don't buy it you will get what you really want sooner. A $50 some dollar knife is what it is, Damascus or not and won't rise in value. I say hold off for what you really want.

I got two from the last run, but it was pretty much a given since I have several Skylines in my collection already. Thinking about getting another one to put in the EDC rotation...

If you like Skylines, or like Damascus, or just want to try something different, then go for it. If none of those are true (or not true enough), then don't. I seem to go through the same dilemma most days. Not enough money, too many cool knives!

Up until this last run, remnants of the previous run were commanding prices of $100 - $125+.
and people were buying....
When something becomes discontinued, it nearly doubles (or more) in price.
So your statement that it won't rise in value is not only misguided, it's false.

Red + Damascus Skyline, I am jealous now, the only way a skyline can get better is if I owned it. If you do this you have to post pictures.

Bottom line, at the absolute worst you can pass it along at no loss even if you use it. I can guarantee though that it will go up again. The thing about these, they disappear fast and it becomes should have instead of should I.

I would say try to get that "I wont use it" idea out of your head. Think about how much you like using your other Skylines and now think that this one is gonna work exactly like the others but it'll look better. Like you already know, you're not going to sell it down the road and make a lot of money on it, might as well use it and enjoy it.

That said, I have a user TNP edition SR1 that already has scratches all over the blade and I still like it, maybe even more than when it was pristine. It's a completely different (good) feeling carrying and using a pricier/rarer knife, I would recommend everyone to try it. By "carrying and using" I don't mean go dig something out of the dirt with it, but use it properly.

If you're considering definitely jump on it. You'll regret it of you don't. Some of the patterns I've seen have been slightly unappealing but for the most part they look quite good. It was the sharpest Skyline I've gotten out of the box out of the four i have owned.

I've been contemplating this myself! But only for the blade. I have the blue handle from the recent BLBW that I think would look sweet with a dam blade, similar to the photo above. (Though I think my blue is a little darker?)

What's holding me back is that I will have spent ~$140 to make this combo. Which seems like a lot. Maybe I could combine the leftover parts and sell it as a regular black wash skyline.

Only magical when quenched in unicorn blood, after being forged in a volcano. ;)

Red and Damascus is nice. I'm debating a Blue and Damascus as well, but the Blue and Blackwash looks pretty awesome as is.

As for your original question... Yes. You should get a Damascus Skyline. :)
