Should I Buy a Native?

I find myself with a few bucks more than the budget permits. Not a lot, mind you (the next Randall will have to wait a while), but enough for a Native. I really love the looks of the knife, but the reviews I've read have been inconsistent. What's your opinion? Should I or shouldn't I?

i don't like them at all, they just don't seem to work well, but others really love them, seems to be either love it or loathe it.

i'd say try it, you can always move it on if it doesn't suit you

My first one handed folder was a native, and I thought it was great. I've always liked the front choil, but if you're not a fan of choils, then maybe the native isn't for you....Check out the Tenacious too.

the only thing that bugs me about the native CF is that the finger opening is real close to the handle. The Sage which is pretty similar has a nice cutout for the Spyder Hole

Terrible photo, but it's the best this POS cell phone can do:

Yeah, I think I can handle the forward finger choil.

Funny you should mention the Tenacious - I sliced myself up with that one quite nicely at the Spyderco outlet store last Fourth of July. Wicked sharp, but it just didn't feel good in my hand.

Alexcue, you posted while I was writing this. Will check out the Sage for sure.

I have several Spyderco folders and I've EDCed many different models. Currently I am EDCing a G-10 Harpy and a 440V, SE Native model.

When I started EDCing the Native last September I was just wanting to EDC a blade that I wouldn't miss much if I lost it. I was working at a place with a lot of theft going on so I decided to do the Native because of ease of replacement and I do have a back up for it just in case.

For all my standard, conventional blade needs the Native has been a very pleasant surprise. The 440V blade steel has become one of my very favorite steels. I'm now looking for other Spyders with that steel.

But to answer your question I highly recommend the Native in either SE or PE for an everyday, hard work folder. The SE model does have 3/4 of an inch of plain edge on the tip of the blade which is enough for me to do my plain edged chores with. I've been very pleasantly surprised at the great usage and great performance I've had with the 440V, SE Native. There is truly something very special about Golden CO USA made Spyders. I don't plan on changing my EDCs anytime soon either

I do not like the Golden Native, but the Native 3 is my favorite folder. It's bigger size and much larger choil just works for me.

Love the blade style and overall design. A very good bang for your buck knife. I prefer the older flat handle Native models. The Native III just didn't feel right in pocket for me with it's thicker body. Haven't handled the IV so I can't speak to that one.

I have 2 Natives, one SE and one PE. I EDC'd the SE for about 6 months until the blade got a little loose. I've EDC the PE some without any problem. I am now EDC'ing a Delica SE. I really like having screws in the handle that I can tighten.

I say No, I never liked Spydercos. Could never figure out what everyone was going on about. Got a Native I (440V blade) PE as part of a trade . . . It's been downhill ever since.

Got lots of Spydercos now and a few others too, however, the Native is new far away and has proven itself a great design that does many things well.

So you have been warned ;)

My first Spydie was C41 Native. Great ergos, great steel. I like Native2, I had one in PE and gifted to my friend, who couldn't afford at that time. I own G10 Native, still new FFG Native4 was well above any expectations and still is. If it is out of your price range, in few month Spyderco will have FRN model from Golden, may be even couple sprints with various steels.

Of all of the folders that I've owned, the Native III was my favorite. I have larger hands and the fuller handle on the Native III fits them just fine. However, with the new Native IV, steel liners, screw construction, carbon fiber, and flat ground blade, the Native IV has become my favorite. Everyone will give you "their" opinion including myself, but again I'm biased for the Natives. You need to try the different models in your own hands and decide for yourself. But.... I think you would like a Native.

Does it fit your hand..?

Your pocket...?

Your wallet....?

If it does, then get it.

You won't be sorry. The Native is an excellent knife. (I have two of 'em.) :D
