Should i buy a new knife for survuval purposes?

Chris Reeve makes nice knives.

There have been reported failures from shock with CR fixed blades. Noss has broken a few, and I have to say, watching how fast they break, compared to many other knives, both more expensive, and much much less, I thing there is a shock fracture issue there.

I would not be comfortable cross batoning with these CR fixed blades.

I have a lot of fixed blades both more expensive and less that I would not hesitate to cross baton through a big log.

The good thing about the CR line of fixed blades is that they have good resale value.

I don't like the proud tang design. It feels fine in hand when holding, but when chopping it transfers shock.

Actually, i have done a little study of Noss's videos. The Green Beret that he break is the s30v version. The Green Beret i have is the s35vn version, which is a bit tougher.
Also, the Green Beret and the Hollow handle CRK had a rounded spine, i think this is one of the cost of breakage against the big iron hammer. Since the rounded spine have less surface of contact to the hammer, the rounded spine is more likely to produce a dent, which is a weak point!
The Cold Steel SRK survived the hammer test, one of the reason its because it had a flat spine.
Another reason that the Green Beret break its because Noss hammered the Green Beret into a knot of a wood plank! But the Cold Steel SRK didnt!!
I think, if Noss repeat the same text with a wooden club weight the same as the iron hammer he used, the wooden club is soft enough to compromise with the spine. The Green Beret would at least survive the "Hammer test".

Fakes happen to everyone eventually, you are probably at a higher risk just due to location.

Do lots of reading here, I'm sure you will find that there is a style and function that appeals to you. There is also a lot of information regarding urban survival and responding to disasters.

You are right about the knife surviving longer with a wooden impact tool, most likely. But he he uses the same hammer on every knife. Something I would never do.

I've had and used a CR Green Beret, I used it in the woods camping. It was a fine blade and held a good edge, while being tough enough to not be bothered by chopping 2 or 3 inch branches. I would have no fear of battoning it straight down through a reasonable sized log. If you beat on most steel knives with a steel hammer your going to do a lot of damage.

I've got several knives in s35vn steel and have used them a lot and I haven't been particularly gentle with them and have had no problems at all. If want something else take a look at Busse, Swamprat and Scrapyard, particularly with the Operation 2 weeks that is currently going on in the Busse forum. New knives almost every week, some classics and all at outstanding deals.

I am happy to read here! There are some many interesting topic.

I dont really know to post an image to this forum. I would like to post a few photos of the FAKE Green Beret, just to let you guys or others who would buy the Green Beret know the difference between them.
Please teach me how to upload images, thank you.

I am happy to learn from your experiences, Chris Reeve's knives are capable enough to situations that i normally face!
I think s35vn is less likely to crack since its tougher than s30v. And s30v is quite a tough steel, i think...

Bk2 is a beast of a blade, and will take whatever punishment you throw at it....it is heavy thou until you grow use to it...

Take a look at SURVIVE, top quality blades at a fair price...if you want it now and can't wait for a pre order keep an eye out on the exchange they pop up quite often lately or the auction site...The gso 5, 5.1, or 6 would suite your needs perfectly.

I would keep what you have. However I always have two of what i need. My anti-zombi, communist, Messican senorita invasion, Mongol hordes, etc blade is a Randall #1 which has lasted a long time. That said I also have a plane old Cold Steel Recon Tanto should I need another fixed blade.

Umm, i have to be sorry that i have bought a fake version of the 7 inch Green Beret and i have done a lot of practice with it.
The fake Green Beret have the exact length in total, length of serrations, length of balde, length of hendle, number of serrations and the POB. With the fake Green Beret, i think i can have a almost real simulation of using the real Green Beret.
I am sorry that i bought the fake version, but i am also happy because i dont need to risk breaking the Real one!

Who said it's a fake? I have read every post and you had mentioned other knives that were made in China that were copies of blades, but not necessarily this one. Is the Green Beret 7 made in China?

By the way, there are a lot of good knives made in China.

I had a bk2 for a little bit. I thought the handle was clunky and the blade too thick for the length. However, I doubt it would ever break even under an extreme "survival" situation. You just have to know what kind of knife you have. I have a Bob Dozier that I wouldn't batton with or do anything too crazy, but come deer season, that knife owns it!

I know :) the Green Beret is a lovable blade, and i am trying to discover what it can do without breaking it.
So, how small does the wood have to be reasonable for a 7 inch Green Beret? 2 inch in diameter?

Go for it. You can do anything with that knife any other blade can do.

It not fragile.

Its just not unbreakable and it doesn't have to be a great tool.

Greevil Alcatraz, looks like you're having fun here. You really hit the ground running. :)

An easy wsy to post pictures is imgur.com. Download your pictures to their site and copy the IMG link and paste it here.

By the way, guys, Noss was a liar and a cheat. Like all of us, he had his favorite knives and companies. That's OK, we all need some kind of focus. But he wasn't too subtle about how hard or how many times he pounded on which knives.

I watched so many videos, they gave positive comments to BK2. Most of them agreed that BK2 is a beast of a blade. It has a thick blade indeed and that is crucial!
I was looking a way to buy survival knives but its quite different to do that in Hong Kong. The rules are strict!
I would like to have a look on the brands you have mentioned, IF they are willing to ship to Hong Kong..

I was thinking if my Green Beret is capable or not to cross baton a 2inch log/wood, until i saw noss baton his Green Beret on a 5-6 inch wood plank(not cross grain) and it had a half-1 inch knot in it! I was surprised, although Noss need some time to go through it.

I know, i know. My Green Beret doesn't have to be a great tool, but it have to be capable enough to baton reasonable sized wooden objects in a survival situation.

I have TWO Green Beret, one is the fake one which made in China. Another one is geniune.
You are right, although China sometimes is a copy cat, the copies from them were quite sharp. Unfortunately their baldes of copies are usually softer, thiner or not symmetrically grinded then what they mentioned on their online shop. That really pissed me off, especially they lied on the thickness of the blade!
