Should I buy the BK-10?

I just looked it up and the Mora No1 does look like a great knife. I wish I could handle the Mora Pro, vs the No1 and No2. All I have is pics to go on....

As cheap as they are buy a few of them. Pick the one you like and stick the others in your car, toolbox, boat etc...

I have Moras stashes everywhere. They have come in handy a few times.

I really appreciate the advice everyone has given on this thread. I'm really excited to start learning to use this fantastic knife. As I haven't done much wilderness survival, I have a lot to learn. I'm originally from a small, rural fishing viliage, so I have ample area to go and try things out when I go home to visit my folks.

As for a knife to pair with this one, as 22-rimfire and mec003 mentioned, the BK-16 looks like a great knife. As I'm new to this gig, I'll probably begin by adding a Mora Pro to the mix (for cost effectiveness). From all accounts, it's a steal of a bargain and would probably be able to handle everything the BK-10 couldn't.

On that note - if I were to add a Mora to the mix, would it be best to get the stainless steel version, or the carbon? If edge retention and other properties were similar between the two steels, would the stainless be a better option? Swedish 12C27 Sanvik vs Swedish high carbon steel. Both are 58HRC.

I have the carbon versions and I'm very pleased with them. No issues with rust but I live in an arid area and even my naked 1095 blades don't rust despite no effort on my part to prevent it.

I have a BK16 too but for pairing I prefer the Mora. As I said before, the BK10 can take the abuse so you don't need a strong secondary knife plus Moras are stronger than people expect. Everyone makes a huge deal about full exposed tangs but it actually takes some effort to break a knife.

I think that you're absolutely right. For anything that requires any sort of stress on a knife, the BK-10 should be able to handle it in spades, so most of the work for the secondary would be detail/food prep work.

As far as carbon vs stainless, I browsed a few Mora threads, and it seems like they are fairly equal regarding blade characteristics. For me, living quite close to the ocean, salt water can be an issue. I'm not overly concerned with it on the BK-10 as I think between the coating and care it should be fine. But if I had a secondary, it may sit in a toolbox/belt for quite some time between uses. More research required, but as of now, I likely would go with stainless on the Mora. That said, the No1/No2 only comes in carbon.

-------

In the middle of this post I just did a bunch of research on the Moras. They seem like an incredible value, and definitely an excellent secondary blade. Sounds like you are getting a top notch knife (albeit with a rat tang) for about 1/5th the price of a BK10. Resilience wouldn't be an issue for me, as I would have the BK-10 on hand for all the hard work, and the Mora would just be a light-use blade. On another thread someone said, "Mora knives are like Pokemon - you gotta catch em all. And for that price, you can!"

Out of curiosity, which Mora do you pair with your BK-10?

Well I only have a regular Companion and a Companion HG which has a thicker blade. So I suppose the regular Companion. I'm going to get some more and get some kydex piggyback rigs made.

My BK10 arrived today! I’m shocked that it arrived so soon! After unboxing it, I simply can’t believe what I’m holding. I have never held anything like it before. Prior to this, the best knife I have held was my cousin’s Buck hunting knife, but this BK10 is in a world all its own. Everything about it oozes quality. The finish is perfect. I can’t find a blemish anywhere on the finish, steel, handle, or edge. The geometry is awesome. I love the clip point. It’s clear that this blade will hold up to hard woodcraft use, but could easily fill the tactical role if the need arose. I love the feel of it. Wow. I need to compose my thoughts before I write any more. Thanks for your advice everyone, I couldn’t be happier with my purchase! (I’ll post more of my thoughts over the Becker sub-forum. I need to work my way towards being a Beckerhead!)

Congrats!

Now go out and get some blemishes on that finish - it would make Ethan smile.

Yea--the BK10 is a great knife--you did good. I love my BK 10 and my 7 ,9 , and 13 too. Especially the BK 7--great size and very versatile.
A good book you may want to check out for bushcraft ideas is "Bushcraft" by Mors Kochanski--he is like the bushcraft guru and there is a lot of very useful ideas and information in that book.
Again--congrats on the BK10

Get the new off of it. Go cut all teh things until that knife looks like it was run over by a tank. :p
