Should I buy this grinder?

I just ran across a 20 year old Bader (think a B2) for $700. It doesn't have a VFD, but does have a new Baldor 2HP motor. I'd want to upgrade it to have variable speed, which will cost me. So, the question is, is it worth it to get this one and make it variable speed, or do I pass and keep looking? It has a 8 or 10 inch contact wheel from the pictures the owner (wife of a recently deceased maker) sent, and I don't know what other accessories.

What do y'all think?

If it's in decent shape, I'd say it's worth it. Especially if it has a platen too, or some other stuff. They are solid grinders, the B2's.

Don't know, might have to run down and take a look for you. What is the address of the owner?:D Like Salem said, if it's in good shape it would be worth it. The VFD can be added later. Many times the widow will have a whole lot more than just the grinder laying around. Good luck and lets see some pics.

Plus one on the other stuff too!
Looking in the background it looks like there's lots of other stuff.

+1 for going to take a look at it. Assuming it's in ok shape that's a great price, even without the platen or any other accessories.

Looks like an old drill press to the left there, behind the grinder. Obviously a buffer on the far side....

There are two B2s for sale in my state on CL right now, one is $1200 and one is $1500. Both are good deals since the $1500 one has a bunch of accessories. $700 is sounding pretty sweet in comparison.

Yes you should. And if this was a maker, there may be other stuff of interest there. I am sure he would be happy that his knifemaking tools continue to make knives, I know I would.

If you do go there, please extend our condolences. :(

And if you DON'T go there, then hook a brother up and share the wealth (of knowledge). Are they only selling the grinder or are there other goodies?

I just let her know that I'll take it, and that I'm interested in most of the rest of her shop. I know for sure she has a Baldor buffer on a stand, and who knows what else in the way of supplies and materials. It's a good thing I spend half an hour with her on the phone yesterday evening, because she said her phone has been ringing like crazy but she'd take her ad down and save it for me!

The plan is to pay her asking price on the grinder, make offers that I can afford on the stuff I'm interested in, and, whether I get her equipment or not, try to leave her with a good idea of the fair value of what she has so she doesn't get taken advantage of.
