Should I buy this

Yeah a bandsaw is more useful over all. However I have a scroll saw that sees lots of action for various things. For thinner stuff it is much quicker and easier to just flip a switch and cut it out very precisely. Bandsaw your setting tension and compensating for blade drift and what not. Still the scroll saws wont be cutting out scales but I like them for cutting saya outlines, trimming scales, and various other things when I am cutting the smaller stuff.

I'd pass on that deal even if I was looking for a scroll saw. But as other's have said a bandsaw is best, find a used portaband and mount it on a stand for double duty cutting blade blanks and handle scales out. I found one for $100 not too long ago.

I use a scroll saw for rough cutting handle scales. It works well for me. But I also have two porta bands and an 18 inch wood band saw. If you can only have one it should be a porta band. Jess

I tried a scroll saw years ago and it didn't really work for me. I have a 14 inch bandsaw and a portaband on a Swag table. I too second it, if you can only have one get the portaband.

The advantage of a scroll saw over a band saw is that it can make inside cuts.

I like old machinery, but Im not sure I'd like that smallish looking table. It's probably built better than modern offerings at that price range.

I think newer scroll saws can be found on CL for $30-$50ish with bigger tilt tables, adjustable speeds, and dust blowers - so you might be able to strike a deal with the guy and get the price lowered.

FWIW, Hegner and Dewalt are probably top of the line scroll saws, but in a completely different price ballpark.

I would personally probably pass on that machine though unless I really wanted a vintage tool.

Look up bandsaws in your area on craigslist. I did a quick search and there were a ton of them including some metal ones like the milwake port a band and a 4x6.
