My friends, please accept my late post in this interesting thread of Butchery šŸ˜‚ , no seriously, when you own a Knife whos to say what you do with it, now if it was a very collectable or Historic piece I would be absolutely begging you not to do this, and I am sure from what we know about you matey you wouldn't do that either - in saying that that 85 is a nice Knife.
Here is Charlies beautiful harness Jack 10, an outstanding Knife.. this one is mine...

And our very good mate Bob the Biscuit committed sacrilege by doing the exact same experiment you are about to- or halfway doing now, I own Bobs Harness 10 Mod and its a pure treasure - here is Bobs work pictured with my untouched HJ10...

Please - picture Bob at his workbench modifying this Knife, it brings a smile to me but also a few tears well up picturing him do this work....

And my guess is that the sacrileged, modded one holds as much value to you, and around these parts in general, as the unmolested HJ10! Thanks for sharing, Duncan!

Both are treasures that's for sure- I simply couldn't let go of my HJ's that Charlie has fathered, but man... one where Bob - being the guy who he was and with him modifying it yeah it is extremely precious.
If The Blade-forums was an physical community in which we all lived, and we had a Blade-forums Museum - Bobs Knife I would gladly put in there for public view with a good description of Blade-forums Bob the Biscuit, I am sure there are a few others who have Bobs Mods who would also participate. :)

thats why I carry this one,

Bob originally modified that spey into a spear and LastRodeo LastRodeo got his hands on it and passed it to me at a great deal since Id be devastated if I ever lost Bob's last gift his modified 15 that he rescaled. I had it modified one last time, swappinging that spear with a clip I got from that rendezvous we all attended.

it was indeed! definitely one of my favorites. hope yall make it to another one some day! I can still hear it " that'd buff right out Jack"

I think you should do it, if it’s done well it will be nearly the exact same shape as the ā€œpinchableā€ clips of the 15’s or 77’s. I’ve been thinking about doing one but missed out on them haven’t been able to find one that wasn’t too expensive now.

traumkommode traumkommode - are ya gonna do it??????
Yes!!!

Wanted to give an update - I did the prep work yesterday morning, planning to do the grinding in the afternoon. I went to HF to pick up 1x30" belts and a circular saw. They had my 80 grit zirc belts, but the 120 grit that were listed in stock were out of stock. So it's going to be next weekend at the earliest that I get to do the grinding, but here are images/instructions for the prep work:

1) Trace the original blade, being very careful to get the line just at the edge and not splayed in/out. I make a mark where the original swedge starts, too, to know where to start the clip. I do this tracing in pen so that it cannot change:

2) Try several radius-ed edges until the desired clip profile is found. Here I used a salad plate, but sometimes I freehand. I make this trace in pencil so I can change it if I don't like the look:

3) Once I'm satisfied, I cut it out carefully. Looks pretty good:

4) I then affix the cutout to the blade so that I can mark off the area to grind away. We're starting to get a preview of what it will look like:

I agree. I have tested numerous times from where I pinch the blade. It'll be tight with the driver/lifter blade, but there's still enough clearance. The clip starts just a little forward of end of the pull, which should help grinding a better swedge, too.

This is gonna be a winner!!! Thanks for the up-to-date pics. Looking forward to the end result.

When I have repaired broken Blades, I have had to take big proportions of Steel out.
You will find that using too coarser grit wont be needed, in fact 240gwill bring that down extremely fast and controllable, the most important thing when using finer papers is the heat distribution - keep a bowl of water close by and dunk regularly! :)
