I have an Izula that never leaves my side but I am about to fly up to NY for a couple weeks and am debating on whether or not to check it with my luggage since everyone I know who has seen it likes it...a lot, it could be easily stolen by anyone handling my luggage....what do yall think as loyal RAT owners?

i had a similar issue, flying to los angelas for a weekend. i tossed an old timer into my check baggage just because i'd hate to lose my izula. still felt pretty naked, but i tried to keep at least a little whiskey in me to help with that.

I've heard some people lock their knives to the frame of luggage (if yours has a frame of some kind..), that would be worth a try.

Or wrap it in a sack of seemingly filthy clothes.

I've used zip ties to do this and never had an issue.

I also usually include a note wrapped around the knife that it has been photographed and is legal to carry in the specific city and state I am visiting.

when we flew over teh summer the mr locked his izula to the bottom of the suit case. only way to get it off was to take EVERYTHING out and cut the lock or break the suit case.

Why did you think that it has that hole at the end of the handle? :D

You guys are freaking me out!

I am about to fly back to Oregon on the 21st. I am planning on packing/ checking all my good fixed blades. Needless to say, its all I've got!

In my inventory will be a RC-3 and an Izula. Wish me luck! I would not leave home without them.

Probably the safest option, though the least convenient, is to mail them ahead - insured via priority mail if its an expensive bunch...

Might be overkill for an izula though :D

It's a $40 knife. Bring it. If it gets stolen, buy another.

Heck, buy another right now, just in case. Perfect reason to buy another knife.

Why don't you UPS or FedEx it right before you leave?! Then when you arrive it will be there waiting and you, without any problems. Some people I know ship their clothes that way so they don't lose anything, plus you don't have to lug a bunch of things through the airport.

ive flown with a grand of knives twice....no problems. might be a third as well. of course it was in my duffle which i tie insanely with pcord.....so i KNOW if it had been messed with.

I like the duffle/ paracord philosophy, I might have to borrow that.

I had to fly down south a while back to FL, I just bought another knife when I landed, and mailed it home to myself when I left. Packed a 111mm SAK in my bag, and a second in a different part of the bag, but honestly..... well my luggage screams "this guy is broke"... half the time I expect the airport bag handlers to leave me donation to get a new bag :)

Anyways... if you are REALLY that concerned about it... I am SURE you can find a good fixed blade in NY to hold you over til you get home.

I flew out of Boston to Orlando and tossed my izula and a swissspirit in my checked duffel bag (it was to prevent the loss of my sebenza in checked baggage)
It came out fine on both ends, and Logan Airport is notorious for missing/confiscated things lately.

Do what you got to do...
